Santorum ‘Kicking Around’ 2012 Prez Bid
Pekoe Joe ^ | 04/08/2010 | Craig Nunley

Posted on 04/08/2010 4:33:49 AM PDT by butterbean

I attended a talk given by Rick Santorum last night in Ashburn, Virginia. He spoke about the current political landscape, criticizing Obama and his administration on a long list of domestic and foreign policy issues. He said it wasn’t a forgone conclusion that the Republican party would win big in November because of their big spending ways last time they held power. The focus he said should now be on supporting good candidates that can win in November

During the Q&A after his presentation he was asked if he planned a run for the White House in 2012. He answered by saying that he was “kicking around” the idea. I guess this may not be big news, but I’m so used to hearing potential candidates playing coy and saying that it’s too early to be thinking about a run in 2012 that it’s refreshing that someone would respond truthfully. Santorum also said that he’s more interested in Republicans fielding a good conservative candidate than being that candidate himself.

This of course got me to thinking about whether I could support Santorum in 2012. I think I prefer him to any of the GOP candidates running in 2008. On the ideology/policy questions I think he is a solid conservative across the board. This I like quite a bit. It’s the primary criteria for judging a candidate for office. The secondary thing to evaluate is his ability to lead, persuade and inspire. I’m not sure about Santorum in this respect. I’d have to see him in campaign mode.

Sorry Rick, that incident with your dead infant child is so creepy it’s going to destroy you with independents. Forget about it. Anyway, America only likes new faces that nobody ever heard of before.

"He supported Spectre and not Toomey. ‘Nuff said..."

In his defense, I think he was being a good party soldier. George W. asked him to go out and campaign for Specter because they didn't think Toomey could win in a general. I don't agree with this strategy, but when your President asks you to do something like this, you probably do it. My guess is that even someone like Jim Demint would do this if asked.

What is really a measure of his beliefs and world view is his losing campaign of 2006. This was the lowpoint for conservative candidates with the Congress involved in profiligate spending and the war was at it's lowest approval in the minds of voters. Santorum did not back away from his principles one iota. He went out defending the war and defending conservative principles. Even though those were unpopular stances. He didn't shift with the wind as some candidates (cough, cough Romney) have done. A man that sticks to his conservative principles even in bad times, can be counted on not to waiver...

He’s a good fill-in for Bennett.

That should be the extend of his political involvement.

That's true he has some good qualities. His problem is that he's not likable. And you can't get around that.

“He is a RINO.”

That’s really a ridiculous statement.

He couldn’t win in a million years though.

I admired and supported Rick Santorum since 1990 when he knocked on my door in Pittsburgh when he was first running for congress. I lost respect for him in 2004 when he supported Specter over Toomey in the primary- selling out his conservative values for “the good of the party”. This is why Rick lost his seat to Casey in 2006- people like me could no longer support him. Consider this- if Toomey had had Santorums support, and won, health care would not have passed. Either Toomey or Santorum, or both would have put the dems below 60 votes last December. Rick had his chance and he threw it away on party politics.

Santorum lost my vote for Senator and FOREVER when he supported Spectre (intentional misspelling) over Toomey. Actions have consequences -— in politics as well as physics.

"His problem is that he's not likable."

I never thought that about him. I like him, but perhaps others think the way you do. He always came off as a good guy to me, but I don't know. It's all irrelevant anyways because I truly doubt he will run. I want to see him President for one reason. Pennsylvania has only had one man from this state become President. It was James Buchanan who was definitely one of the five worst Presidents of all time. A rumored homosexual (he never married) and outright racist. We in Pennsylvania would like to erase that stain on us... : )

I agree with Santorum on almost everything politically. That being said, when my brother was in Iraq years ago, his unit did not have the gear they needed for the field and it shocked me (night vision etc). So I contacted BOTH Santorum’s office and Specter’s office, both by email and phone. I never heard back from Santorum. Not even once.

Specter, for all of his flaws, got the equipment to my brother’s unit.

I will never forget that.

Agreed Rick is not a RINO nor could he win but would love to have him compete though. I personally like Haley Barbour myself he has governed well for 8 years in Mississippi and not been whining about Katrina.
