In the March 13 issue of WORLD, I wrote about the financial troubles plaguing St. Vincents Hospital in Manhattan (the last Roman Catholic general hospital in New York) and the struggles of other religious healthcare providers whose charitable mission makes it difficult to compete in the healthcare economy.
Looks like my story has a sad ending. An update on the fate of St. Vincents: Its due to effectively close. The New York Times reports that the board voted Tuesday to close the hospitals inpatient services, although its outpatient services will continue for the time being. The hope is that the hospital will remain open as an urgent care center and that it will be able to maintain some of its outpatient services, like HIV/AIDS treatment. This would require finding a partner.
One of my close friends had a baby at St. Vincents less than a week ago. New Yorkers will miss its tradition of compassionate care.
look for all Catholic hospitals to close if Obamacare forces them to offer abortions
Not only abortions but benefits for “spouses” ( note the quotes ) of gay employees who work in Catholic hospitals.
