BERLIN German authorities have shut down Berlin's main international airport after construction workers discovered a World War II bomb there. A police spokesman told The Associated Press on Wednesday the bomb's weight is estimated at a quarter ton. Police said no planes are allowed to land or take off from Tegel airport until experts manage to defuse the bomb. Police are blocking all access roads. Local media reported the airport would remain closed until the evening, forcing the cancellation or diversion of dozens of flights.

Germans? --
"Pearl Harbor bombed by the Germans" is a famous line by John Belushi, in the movie "Being There."

Could someone please explain to me how this device is suddenly dangerous, yet planes have been taking off and landing over it for nearly 70 years? The safety zone around a 500lb bomb blast is about 125 meters. Put up some yellow tape and keep flying.

"Pearl Harbor bombed by the Germans" is a famous line by John Belushi, in the movie "Being There." I thought it was "Animal House".

I don't have a clue. What is interesting is that at Schonefeld (soon to be Brandenberg International Airport) they are digging like mad. . . but no bombs pulled up to date!!

My naming a Sellers movie as containing a Belushi line was a deliberate parallel to Belushi's Germans/Japs joke.

Sounds like over reaction to me, the bomb hit the ground, didn’t go off, lay there for over 65 years with construction going on all around it, airplanes much heavier than existed in those days frolicking in it’s general area all these years, corrosion, water leakage, then some goober rips it out of the ground with a backhoe! I’m no expert, but I don’t think it would explode even if Obama signed an executive order or it to.

The bomb found yesterday was a German one with a Soviet made detonator.

How do they know it was an American Bomb? The Brits dropped a lot of tonnage and were a lot more indiscriminate about where. The typical British bombs looked like oil drums-- no fins or streamlining, just lowest-cost tickets to hell. They dropped at night so there was no effort toward precision bombing on most raids.
