Where was the uproar when this was done in the public school systems?
“Our Constitution calls for separation of church and state.”
....this fool really believes this....shows you how pervasive this hostility to Christianity is.
To be consistant, they really need to abolish the word “holiday” and replace it with “non-workday”. After all, a holy day implies a God, which might be offensive to atheists.
I remember also one of my cousins spitting at me the word "denocrap" because we came from Boston and ... well ... that's what we were.
It didn't mean much of anything to me other than, I forever have this idea that Iowans are conservatives.
It was on that vacation I experienced my first drag race, and met "Big Daddy Roth" and actually attended a "River City" type community fair, complete with the old farm boy greased pig chase. (River City of Music Man fame)
So ... it has been very difficult for me to understand ... what happened?
Most of the stores in Davenport were “Closed for Easter” last Sunday. A large percentage of people went to church and then had dinner with extended families. I guess the people were speaking truth to power.
I grew up in Davenport and spent the first 35 years of my life there.
The Mayor and Council are basically good people, but they are scared to death of the civil rights commission. They know that anything they turn down will be met with charges of racism or bigotry. The commission has them by the short hairs, and they know it.
I wasn’t a bit surprised to see this happen. Until we get people brave enough to stand up in the face of bogus racism charges and do what’s right, this kind of stuff will continue to happen.
ping.
What’s with Liberal Iowa? Gay marriage, eliminate Good Friday, etc. Maybe too many years of Democrats giving money to farmers in their vote-buying social programs.
Bump and Save
First response to the CRC, should have been “Please show me where in the Constitution it states a separation of Church and State, my understanding is that it would not create or establish a religion. These people really need to be smacked down when they bring this crap up.
What is the demographics of Davenport that they have their own civil rights commission? Why do they have one? What can this organization do to the town if they level charges of racism at it? Also, if race is the primary bugaboo, this becomes even more confusing. By race I presume you mean black people. Aren’t the majority of American blacks associated with the Christian faith, at least nominally? It makes no sense that a black watch dog group would be offended at the name of a holiday they observe. Are there other races in Davenport? Arabs? Curious to know.
You took the words right out of my mouth. To East coast dwellers, like me, Iowa was always thought of as a conservative state. However, it seems to be anything but conservative. I wonder why? Maybe you are right about the government support to farms. But would that be enough to make a population socially liberal?
So let’s start a drive to rename the City of Davenport the City of Sofa.
About 10% of Davenport’s population is black, and about 6% (probably higher now) is Hispanic.
The Davenport CRC is a priveledged, protected organization that pretty much gets what it wants, mainly because the city council is gutless and afraid to confront them on the issues.
Yes, a substantial number of blacks there call themselves Christian, but they are dyed-in-the-wool liberals first who toe the line when it comes to liberal PC doctrine, even if it’s an attack on a Christian holiday.
No, I prefer "City of Couch". Then all their signs could read "CoC"...a virtual field day for adolescents everywhere! 'Twould serve them right. Stupid is as stupid does, and submitting to threats without a fight is stupid.
I sit corrected. CoC is OK by me.
Which is why when someone wishes me "Happy Holidays", I respond with "Happy Holy Days to YOU, too."
LOL!!!
