What About Abortion in Cases of Rape, Incest? Women and Sexual Assault

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Many people, including those whose mission is to help women and girls who are victims of sexual assault and abuse, believe abortion is the best solution if a pregnancy occurs.

Yet our research shows that most women who become pregnant through sexual assault don't want abortion, and say abortion only compounds their trauma.

Abortion in the case of rape or incest is the only situation I can think of, outside of sharia law, where an innocent victim is executed for the crimes of another.

This is why the “morning-after pill” can make sense.

Abortions after being fertilized should only be performed if the life of the woman is in doubt, then it is simple self-defense.

Induce early and try to save the baby’s life by reasonable means. The baby will likely still die but at least we won’t be butchering an innocent.

Exactly. This is literally “punishing the child for the sins of the father.”

I thought they were all rape or incest.

When the laws limited abortion to rape and incest, they were all rape or incest.

Excellent point. Its still a connivence factor, has nothing to do with how she got pregnant.

What about them? NONE of those things are worse than the murder of an innocent life. Murder is murder is murder. End of story.

Popular snap judgment philosophy. This was parroted by my son, at age 15, and I asked him what the unborn child did to deserve to die. He’s grown up a lot now, age 23 and in the military. He’s for protecting all life, but also a man enough to kill someone. The world is going to be ok with people like him in it.

The cases of pregnancy caused by rape are extremely low..think of how difficult is for many couples who long for children to get pregnant. They have sex at special times, eat special foods, take medications.. Besides, I believe that the trauma of being raped causes chemical/hormonal changes in a woman that make conception more difficult.

I agree. Though I think I would have carried the baby, providing the rapist didn't know about it. I have read where rapists come back, and lay claim to the child, and make lives hell for the mother and baby. I really am ambivalent about this.

I agree. I would not want to carry a child of a rapist and would take this pill.

Years ago I sat through a Pro Life film which indicated that the IUD was a form of abortion. Although, anti abortion, I have used forms of birth control and became more discerning of the ProLife voices.
At a certain point, ProLifers will never gain a consensus if they insist a victim of rape be FORCED to carry a child after being raped. I consider myself ProLife and have been cursed by both sides of this fight.
I feel that I am reality based and recognize that more babies will be saved with compromise.
I too agree with the Morning After pill.

Since when has it been good therapy for a raped or sexually abused victim to her murder her innocent baby? Oh I forgot. . .since Roe v Wade.

Would someone please post a link to where a rape led to a pregnancy. If I’m correct it takes many hours for the sperm to reach and burrow into the egg and a few days for the fertilized egg to attach to the uterine lining.

The medical definition of the start of pregnancy is about 10 days later, at implantation.

If it takes a person 10 days to seek medical treatment or aid after a rape then I don’t have a lot of compassion for the victim. I have more compassion for the developing child.

I don’t know of any scientific evidence for your belief.

well, for one, pregnancy caused by rape accounts for less than 5% of all pregancies. Here is an article on the issue:
