Immigration effort lacks 2nd backer from GOP (RINO McCain MIA; Cornyn, Kyl stepping gingerly)
The Washington Times ^ | 2010-04-05 | Stephen Dinan

As President Obama and Senate Democrats push to pass an immigration bill this year, one key ingredient is still conspicuously missing: a second Republican to co-sponsor the legislation.

Most Republicans considered likeliest to join Sens. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, and Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, in writing a bill either have taken a pass or are still on the fence. Key figures say the country does not have the kind of consensus needed to tackle the issue.

"It just doesn't exist anymore," said Sen. Jon Kyl, the Arizona Republican who in 2007 took the lead on writing a bill with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, only to see it fail when a bipartisan majority of senators joined a filibuster against it.

Mr. Schumer and Mr. Graham are guardedly pressing ahead with a bill that would legalize illegal immigrants, establish a new system for allowing in foreign workers, and tighten controls on employment, including requiring the use of biometric identification Social Security cards.

Mr. Schumer sees a path for a bill, Mr. Graham sounds uncertain, and both of them are looking to Mr. Obama to help.

(snip)

"I'm interested in trying to find a middle ground but I don't think we're anywhere near close," Mr. Cornyn said. He also said he's been asking to see exactly what Mr. Schumer and Mr. Graham have in mind but that they haven't shown him anything.

"I don't know if that exists," he said.

0bamcare redux?
Bring on the sleazy backroom deals, the vote buying, the intimidation and threats, and the sudden exposure of any non conformist in the media for “tickling” congressional male/female staff ala Eric Massa.

Kyl’s waiting to see how McCain does in the primary before deciding if he too will betray his Arizona constituents. The fact that McCain isn’t out front with Grahamnesty on this issue demonstrates just how frightened he is of a voter backlash on illegals. Only a McCain defeat will really drive the point home with Kyl and other pro-illegals Republicans. Alas, I don’t think even that will be sufficient to wake up the Senator from South Carolina.

It’s been quiet. They’re waiting for the Rino’s primaries to be finished with.

Well, if it received such a bipartisan majority filibuster, that would indicate it NEVER existed you TWIT.

McCain will be there pushing amnesty (though he says it is NOT amnesty) especially if he gets re-elected!

He actually said this just a few days ago:

“President Reagan granted amnesty to two million people and that was wrong,” McCain said.

From JD Hayworth’s Website:

Illegal Immigration

A national leader in the fight to secure our borders, J.D. Hayworth has actually “written the book” on the subject, “Whatever It Takes”. When John McCain proposed his Amnesty Plan—the Heritage Foundation said it would cost taxpayers $2.6 Trillion—J.D. Hayworth stood up and fought against it. Taking on a U.S. Senator with nearly 30 years of seniority took courage, but J.D. understood that our economy could not survive the long-term effects of the McCain-Kennedy plan, and that encouraging millions of people to break our laws was a recipe for disaster.

J.D. has led the fight for real border security, interior enforcement, and requiring that law enforcement enforce our laws and protect our citizens. It is no surprise that he has been endorsed by great leaders like Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and State Senator Russell Pearce.

What the heck is Lindsey Graham’s mental defect? Does anyone have this guy’s office number. We must flood his phone lines on a daily basis to the same extent as we flooded the phone lines for healthcare.

One other point, the amnesty issue can easily be tied to healthcare. Obama stated that illegals would not be covered. Well duh, he is simply going to make them all legal and then they will be covered. Bet that was not factored into the CBO’s estimstes for the costs of the healthcare law?

Another reach out across the aisle, in the spirit of bipartisanship example of the spineless OP(formerly the GOP). It's truly astounding why people support the OP that has consistently eschewed conservative principles defies logic.

Curious....do you know if this is something that, without the support, Obama can push through with an executive order?

Not likely. Executive order cannot trump current law.

Without the very strong challenge from JD, McInsane would be shoulder to shoulder with Graham and Schumer right now, pushing amnesty as hard as as can, just like he did with Ted Kennedy in 2007.
