Brutality, mental or physical, requires that the brutalizer cease to see the target as equally human, but merely as an object. At the same time, it’s a uniquely human trait to find the courage to push aside the urge to be cruel and remain present with the other person as an equal human. Throughout this fight for healthcare reform, we’ve seen a great deal of cruelty. A small minority of those who thought it was a bad idea have been egged into despicable behavior by a noise machine the likes of which has never before been seen.

While death threats and violent acts are completely beyond the pale, what do you expect when you completely bypass the debate process and violate every single rule put into place over time to facilitate gathering a consensus in the legislative branch to ram a bill down a dissenting majority's throat? The whole point of the way our government is structured is to put a damper on the passions that arise from these kinds of debates. The Democrats decided that their goals of achieving power are vastly more important than following the wisdom of the Founding Fathers' vision for peaceful governance.
