ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 04/03/2010
It's tempting to think of college campuses as islands of enlightenment, places where students embrace new ideas, people and cultures without the specter of hate hanging overhead.
Tempting. But it's not always the case, as demonstrated by events on campuses in Missouri and across the nation in recent months.
There were cotton balls scattered outside the black cultural center at the University of Missouri-Columbia. There have been racial slurs and a threat of lynching at St. Louis University. There was a swastika scrawled on a bathroom wall near a Jewish studies center at the University of Miami. There were death threats against black students left on a bathroom wall at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio. And a white fraternity sparked an uproar at the University of California at San Diego, when it sponsored a ghetto-themed "Compton Cookout" to mock Black History Month.

More often than not these ‘hate crimes’ turn out to be the ‘victim groups’ seeking attention.
Years in jail over cotton balls is a bit absurd. Meanwhile, 40,000 whites are raped a year by African-Americans and MSM finds no racism in these violent crimes against women.
And no one is talking about it.
There is a lot more in the mix than these little liberals are revealing IMHO.
Yes but that would be racist to mention that...(sarc.)
Maybe everyone has just gotten fed up with all the PC “Don’t speak! you might offend someone” crowd.
Uh those same college students aren’t going after other races because they are sick of “PC talk”.
If you really want to make friend with them,go ahead tell them about God and country.
See what happens, some might actually listen but most of them.....not so much.
I must not be enough of a racist teabagger to know WTF do cotton balls have to do with racism.
I’m in college right now, and they don’t need to. These kids are indoctrinated and re-enforced the Marxist dogma in just about every class. The left way of thinking is prevalent in all disciplines.
I would kep a keen ear open for rumors of orchestrated dissent backed by Obamas little factions like ACORN and such, Obama wants riots like they had in China.
Obama wants Civil War 2.
Obama WANTS another Kent State massacre.
The only race that was taught to be ‘color blind’ were the whites. I realized in the past year, NONE of the minorities were hounded or pressed to see everyone as equal; only the whites were hounded about it. I’ve never looked at another person’s color as a determining factor of who they are (up until last year). All the while the whites have been completely beat up about supposed racism, while the minorities have been taught to hate whites, to ‘get even’ with whites, to steal from the whites. Well the game is up...racism hardly exists in the whites and when it does it’s generally a democrat!...and we can clearly see where racism has festered all these years. These episodes on the campuses are probably committed by Democrats.....
I went through in the middle 70’s through a Master’s around ‘80.
Had the same crap in all of the “humanities” courses.
Had nothing but hard work in the core, for me, engineering courses.
YMMV, and things might have changed, but if you select a make work degree, you get make work instruction, with the known make work result.
I had make work mentors in the old day and they presented the correct problems. I make work now and these kids are OK!
Most of these alledged racial slurs are brought about by the left.
Sign of the (we are a multicultural nation/our diversity is our strength/racial sensitivity/social justice”) times ...
When I was in college, in the late 70’s in South Georgia, the school was incredibly diverse, and yet at the time none of us seemed to find any problems at all, nor even really consider that we were a “diverse” campus. The socio-political aspects of diversity hadn’t become acculturated then. We were all just college students.
It was a small school with only a few hundred students, and there were dozens of Japanese and Korean students, at least a dozen or so from the middle east, numerous south Florida Hispanics, probably 15% black, some German exchange students, and the rest were “evil, awful, racist southern cracker haters” like myself.
I can’t think of a single incident of any sort in the two years I was there that was based on racial or ethnic issues. Nada. Zip. In fact some of the most fun times I can remember are hanging with the dudes from Japan, getting invited to one of the black frat parties because I lent them my PA, etc. In fact, I am sure that if someone had caused an incident based on someone else’s race or nationality, they would have answered to “all of us” in an old school sort of way.
The “progressive” influence of group identity politics and victimization seem to have really helped in the past 30 years ... /s
SHHHHH! You're making us look like racists for mentionin that! /s
Erin Whitley (a student who felt herself the victim of racism):
It made me feel really uncomfortable.
Lori Brown, associate professor of sociology (emphasis supplied for obvious reasons) at North Carolina's Meredith College, said
campus dynamics are further complicated by students of different backgrounds not always understanding one another and how painful their actions might be.
curmudgeon lady (the first commentator from the public):
How can somebody make it all the way to college without having learned empathy?
The sooner the test of viability of speech becomes the subjective reaction of those who hear it, the sooner the left succeeds in killing the First Amendment. That is because the requirements of empathy are infinite, the sensitivity of the offended is never to be questioned, the boorishness of the offending white male is to be assumed, the goalposts always move.
