Middle-class woman gives up life of luxury to live in a mud hut with an African warrior

Colette Armand believes she was hit by a coup de foudre when she first saw her future husband. 'The attraction was instant,' she says.

Meitkini's tribe have no possessions and no running water, and their food is either plucked from the ground or killed with a spear.

Nonetheless, after a courtship of three years, Colette, 24, is preparing to abandon all the comforts of her western lifestyle to join her life permanently with his - even though, to date, she hasn't shared so much as a kiss with her 23-year-old fiance, as Masai rules forbid physical contact between men and women who aren't married.

'The only water came from a small muddy tributary that's home to snakes and crocodiles,' says Colette.

'I was too scared to bathe, so I had to resort to having a makeshift wash in water boiled on the fire -

... after two weeks Colette was told the community had decided to sacrifice a goat as a welcoming gift - a huge honour.

'They slaughtered it in front of me, which was horrible, then put its warm blood in a cup for me to drink. It tasted disgusting, but I had to do it as I would have hugely offended them otherwise. I just closed my eyes and tried not to be sick.'

In the future, she may have to share her husband with other women, as Masai tradition permits any number of wives.

The daughter of a nurse and a businessman, her father's job, took the family all over the world.

Academically gifted, at 17 she was studying in Paris. At 21, disillusioned with her studies and with a failed romance behind her- 'I realised I needed to have an adventure and try and find myself.

Power to her. If you were going to marry into Africa, you could do a lot worse than the Masai. Heck, if I had to choose an African tribe to live with, I would probably choose them.

Collette’s absence will be no loss to the Western World.

From what I am hearing about the UK and its economy, she was smart to leave. She will eat and miss a lot of upcoming social unrest.

How long will that be? Does Tiger have 10 mistresses?

I wonder how much this young, odd, PHD female will change the tribe before she moves on.

Oh, — this ain’t gon’na work, girl.

Friends in colleg married fellow students from Saudi Arabia and Iran. Big mistake for both women.

This sounds like more of the same.

I’m happy for her. Anyone who can date someone for 3 years w/o physical contact probably truly loves the person. I hope the relationship lasts.

Maybe, she’ll modernize them. The children will certainly be curious and ask her about the world she comes from. Some may want to go see it for themselves.

Be interesting to find out. I love the accoutrements of civilization. I like flying in planes, surfing the internet, listening to music on an iPod, drinking water from a faucet, taking a hot shower and driving to a store to buy pre-butchered meat wrapped in cellophane.

I can’t imagine giving it up. I like those things. That is not to say I wouldn’t enjoy living in an environment where there is no noise, and a very cohesive social structure, but the concept of having to haul water every day from a muddy creek and prepare it for drinking...that is something I NEVER want to have to do.

This woman is going to get so many infections, parasites and diseases its not funny. Her immune system is not ready for a full frontal assault of primitivism.

Call me cynical, but I think this represents the height of ‘punishing’ her family (dad abandoned her at 12, she is not speaking to her mother, plus she set out to find herself after a romantic r/ship meltdown).

I just don’t believe this is coming from a “pure” place. I think the girl is looking for ‘specialness’. That “3-year” courtship was long distance—no doubt her story gave her a certain unique accessory in London to tout. Odds a million to one that it lasts.

IMHO.

Sparse: Colette with Meitkini, left, and the Masai chief, right, whose tribe have no possessions and no running water

Shoulda chosen the chief, that way she gets a bigger hut. Plus he is better looking.

Nothing new. I read about thirty years of a European woman who married a Kenyan and was living in a mud hut with him.

What ever turns you on baby! But don’t come crying back to the civilized world!

...and methinks that was the last time she was seen clean to Western standards and wearing new clothes.

I know someone who married a missionary in Africa. Now having children, she is less than thrilled with living in fourth-world conditions.
