FBI warns extremist letters may encourage violence

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal intelligence note is warning police that an anti-government group's call to remove dozens of sitting governors may encourage others to act out violently.

A group that calls itself the Guardians of the free Republics wants to "restore America" by peacefully dismantling parts of the government, according to its Web site.

As of Wednesday, more than 30 governors had received letters demanding they leave office within three days or they will be removed, according to an internal intelligence note by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, which was obtained by The Associated Press.

Investigators do not see threats of violence in the group's message, but fear the broad call for removing top state officials could inspire others to act out violently.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal were among those receiving the letter.

Granholm spokeswoman Liz Boyd said federal authorities had alerted the governor that such a letter might be coming, and it arrived Monday or Tuesday. Boyd, who described the letter as "non-threatening," said it was opened by a staffer and immediately turned over to the Michigan State Police.

Jindal's office confirmed the governor had received a letter from the Guardians of the free Republics and directed all further questions to the Louisiana State Police.

"They called us as they do for any letter that's out of the norm," said.

Lt. Doug Cain, a state police spokesman.

He declined to provide specifics about the letter, but said, "not knowing the group and the information contained in the letter warranted state police to review it." Cain said the letter has gone to numerous governors across the country.

The FBI warning comes at a time of heightened attention to far-right extremist groups after the arrest of nine Christian militia members last weekend accused of plotting violence.

In explaining the letters sent to the governors, the intelligence note says officials have no specific knowledge of plans to use violence, but they caution police to be aware in case other individuals interpret the letters "as a justification for violence or other criminal actions."

The FBI associated the letter with "sovereign citizens," most of whom believe they are free from all duties of a U.S. citizen, like paying taxes or needing a government license to drive. A small number of these people are armed and resort to violence, according to the intelligence report.

Last weekend, the FBI conducted raids on suspected members of a Christian militia in the Midwest that was allegedly planning to kill police officers. In the past year, federal agents have seen an increase in "chatter" from an array of domestic extremist groups, which can include radical self-styled militias, white separatists or extreme civil libertarians and sovereign citizens.

May 4, 1970 (which actually is the last year of the sixties decade so you're good so far) but it was four killed. I read the "article" but didn't catch any mention of the Kent State killings.

If anyone was ultimately to blame, other than the Bill Ayers types who burned down the ROTC building, it was the Teamsters Union snipers who had been shooting at truckers in the Cleveland area during a wildcat strike in the days beforehand. The Guardsmen (mostly kids no older than the students at KSU) had been on duty there before being shifted to the campus.

Almost no sleep for 72 hours filled with legitimate fear of being shot, then having a rock throwing mob coming down a hill right at you, would lead lots of people to pull a trigger in that situation. I was a high school sophomore watching a baseball practice in the bright sunshine about ten miles from Kent when word came over the radio. One of those "never forget moments" like the Kennedy assassination.

What is inspiring people to act is the radical leftist coup d’etat that is occurring in Washington, D.C.

As soon as the biggest losers in government get that through their dense, ideologically driven heads, they can cut their BS and we can cut to the chase.

It was the leftists radicals that caused the trouble then and now the FBI is talking radicals like the right is a radical organization which it is not. They burned down Old Main which was a block form my apartment when I was going to Colorado State University. A radical to me is a leftist but the FBI won't watch their own. Radicals stole some M60 machine guns form CSU ROTC also. I guess anyone that does not believe in the lefts ways is a radical.

There is a disturbing trend of the Left portraying those who oppose them as dangerous while those on their side have a long-documented history of uttering far more hateful vitriol and being more violent.

This double-standard in combination with the sudden concern that merely voicing opposition to current government policy/officials is dangerous leads me to wonder: Is the government contemplating a crackdown?

Will we see censorship? Will violence/harassment by Code Pink, Move-on and other Democrat-friendly sturm abtielung proxies be given a pass by the government and media while those on the other side be subject to arrest?

Will elections be temporarily suspended for the sake of public order until the influence of dangerous elements are neutralized by Our Betters?

I’m sorry if this sounds paranoid, but given how this bill was passed and their history of how they deal with opposing points of view, it is increasingly difficult to put anything past them these days.

Well thats the Obama plan, incite violence so he can declare martial law. Yet they cannopt stop us from peaceful assembly or speech. Thhis is the Obama PLOY!It is also why Obama is acting cocky, so he can incite the hatred to spring violence.

LOL! The FBI is investigating a peaceful call for redress and the justice dept dismisses charges against thugs with clubs blocking voters from the voting booth. Do you need to ask where they think the threat to the country lies?

“or they will be removed” Are people on this forum not concerned about this? You all seem to think it’s OK to threaten to remove democratically elected governors by force in the United States. Please tell me you don’t think this is OK. Is this a forum for people who actually want to dismantle government? We will have Republicans in soon enough. What is happening to people???

I admit I didn’t read the letter with that quote but do you know for sure it’s a call for forcible removal? Could it be they mean to remove them through the election process? And if they don’t specify violent means can you assign violent motives?

There is no such quote. In fact, you will only find the word "force" once in their website.
