CARACAS — Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is set to meet the presidents of Venezuela and Bolivia in Caracas Friday to sign military and energy deals that broaden Russia's footprint in Latin America.

Putin's first visit to Venezuela underscores Russia's deepening relations with Latin America's leading leftist regime, and serves as doorway to a region long considered the US back yard.

Russia and Venezuela in 2005 and 2007 signed 12 military agreements worth some 4.4 billion dollars that have raised some concern in Washington.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez last week thanked Russia for helping Venezuela "bolster its defensive potential" in the face of "threats" from the United States as he announced Putin's visit.

Count me in the handful. I was saying three or four years ago that our days of trouble with Russia were far from over. I got poo-pooed a lot for it on here. Putin is a thoroughly dangerous man who most DEFINITELY has plans to reconstitute the Soviet empire. If anyone can't see that, I have no idea what they're looking at, because it's blatantly obvious.

Russia's Leaders See China as Template for Ruling
New York Times ^ | October 17, 2009 | CLIFFORD J. LEVY

MOSCOW — Nearly two decades after the collapse of the Communist Party, Russia’s rulers have hit upon a model for future success: the Communist Party.

Or at least, the one that reigns next door.

Like an envious underachiever, Vladimir V. Putin’s party, United Russia, is increasingly examining how it can emulate the Chinese Communist Party, especially its skill in shepherding China through the financial crisis relatively unbowed.

United Russia’s leaders even convened a special meeting this month with senior Chinese Communist Party officials to hear firsthand how they wield power. ..."

“The accomplishments of China’s Communist Party in developing its government deserve the highest marks,” Aleksandr D. Zhukov, a deputy prime minister and senior Putin aide, declared at the meeting with Chinese officials on Oct. 9

Aside from natural gas and oil, land-locked Bolivia has 50% of the worlds’ lithium mines, and is Chinas’ main suppier. Bolivia is Marxist, revolutionary, and and enemy of the US. It is arming its five borders with Cuban and Venezuelan help so that it can take on Peru or Chile, or both to reclaim a seaport that was lost in the 1880s, and exert pressure on the other three neighbors as well.
