Republican Congressional candidate George Phillips is trying to slay Democrat Maurice Hinchey.
Phillips is up against a mighty difficult dragon.
At first glance, New York's 22nd Congressional District is predominately rural and above the frost line enough to be Republican. However, a closer look reveals a number of small cities and college campuses that make it the "Run away, run away" district for the GOP.
It's gerrymandered to include Newburgh, Binghamton and Ithaca -- along with a long list of SUNY and private colleges. Hinchey, a nine-term incumbent Democrat, never had it so good. Hinchey also benefits from representing a district so under the media radar that no one knows he is there.
The is the "other race" for Congress in New York.
Local Hudson Valley columnist (and former Queens Conservative) Raquel Okyay had this piece on Phillips -- and a few choice words for Mr. Hinchey:

If a Republican can in spite of having Ithaca, NY in his district... It will speak LOUDLY about rejecting Obama and the Dems.

The college crowd and black voters keep this area liberal Dem. I’d be surprised if that changes.

Phillips is a good challenger in a difficult District. He's been down this road before against Hinchey in 08. This time his positions are sharpened and his desire to win alive. Hinchey is about as left as it gets, so if there is a rejection for that kind of politics at the polls, Phillips might pull it through.

The big surprise may be how little 0bama invests in the mid-terms. He may just decide to save all of his powder for 2012. He may think it will be easier to run against a GOP controlled congress than trying to support his lame government if the Dems keep control.

This can be done. George is a great Patriot! He needs national attention and dollars so that he can defeat Hinchey!

Consider writing a short letter to the editor, including his website, or calling a local, or national, talk show to help him out.

The question is will they go to the polls in November? The "college crowd" isn't just the students. It's the facility and staff which are 90% hardcore left. And they do vote.
To: Behind Liberal Lines
It’s a tough district particularly because of the gerrymandering to include those voters. I can’t help but think that national attention to this race, would help George. People don’t know just how radical Hinchey is.
