Gov. Sends Guard To Border (NM-Token response?)

Gov. Bill Richardson has ordered the New Mexico National Guard to patrol the state's border with Mexico after recent violence in the area.

An administration official declined to release numbers but said the order was effective immediately.

"There will be guardsmen on the border within 24 hours," John Wheeler said late Wednesday afternoon.

Wheeler heads the state's Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, which is coordinating the beefed-up law enforcement presence on the border.

"I want residents in southern New Mexico to know we are taking this border violence very seriously by adding a National Guard presence along with state, local and federal law enforcement patrols along the border," Richardson said in a statement.

The governor had earlier announced that State Police and sheriff's departments would increase patrols after the shooting death Saturday of an Arizona rancher, apparently by someone who then fled to Mexico.

Wheeler said Guard members would supplement existing border security efforts, although he said specifics of the operation would not be disclosed.

"I think part of this function is to ascertain exactly what is going on on the border," Wheeler said.

Really?? You and the Richardson administration know exactly what has been going on. Heck, you've been encouraging it by closing your eyes to the problem of illegals and designating NM a sanctuary state, issuing driver's licenses, etc. It was bound to escalate to violence, especially when US citizens who make their living along the border are left undefended by the government and must resort to personal self defense and incur the wrath of the government if they harm any illegals in the process.

The National Guard will distribute maps and bottles of water to any “illegal migrant” who is not carrying a firearm, and send them happily on their way.

Are they going to be armed? Also, the Arizona governor is screaming that Bozo should put the guard on the border when she has the power to do so. She is merely making noise to distract people from the fact she is doing absolutely nothing about the problem.

People had better wake up this problem and soon.

Ditto to Cedar Dave’s #1... And just about everyone else too.

Richardson holds greater affection and allegiance to Mexico and the Mexican People than he does to NEW Mexico.

I’d like to see some new laws allowing border ranchers to actually protect themselves and their properties. ‘twould be more effective than sending the Guard down there for a week long camp out in aid of Richardson’s smoke and mirrors.
