Malaysian beer-drinking model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno to be punished by caning

A MUSLIM model sentenced to caning for drinking beer in Malaysia said on Thursday she had been summoned for punishment this week by a local religious authority.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 33, was sentenced last year under Islamic law to six lashes and a fine by a religious court in the moderate Muslim-majority country...

An appeals panel upheld the ruling despite the avalanche of criticism, including the government saying the sentence was "too harsh", although it is not clear what punishment she may now receive.

Kartika, whose case has fuelled a debate over rising "Islamisation" of the multi-ethnic country, was to have been the first woman to be caned under Islamic law in Malaysia.

But in a surprise move, three other women were caned in February for having sex out of wedlock.

The type of caning given to male criminals in Malaysia leaves scars. The type she is going to receive (that imposed by religious courts rather than criminal ones) is not equivalent to that in severity, thank God. It’s still barbaric given what it is being given for, but it won’t do any permanent damage. It’s no worse than schoolboys throughout Britain and the Commonwealth (including myself) received at school until quite recently. It hurts a lot, but it doesn’t do any lasting damage.
