Matt Smith, the actor playing the new Doctor, was stopped at Heathrow airport because he was carrying a sonic screwdriver.
Officials took the 'Doctor Who' gadget for a weapon when a security scanner revealed what was in Smith's luggage, according to The Sun.

Why would an actor be carrying around a special effects prop when a series isn’t filming?

Fair point. My guess is that he’s already sufficiently recognizable to big fans of the show that he’s asked to pose for pictures, somewhat “in character,” hence the prop.

Because most of new Doctor Who Actors are fans of Doctor Who.

Matt Smith and the previous actor where both big fans of the show from what I understand. That and psoing for pics with crazed fans, LOL. Dr. Who is also a cultural phenomenon over in the U.K. as well.
The 5th season of DW starts on 3APR2010. It should be posted on YouTube by the end of the day in America.
