[Fake] Tea Party candidate might face felony charge
CNN ^ | March 31, 2010 | Jessica Yellin

He's new to politics and learning fast just how rough a sport it can be.

Scott Ashjian, the Tea Party candidate running for Senate in Nevada, could soon face a felony charge.

He's accused of writing a bad check for $5000 through his asphalt business. The Clark County District Attorney has filed paperwork requesting Ashjian's arrest, but is still awaiting a signature from a judge.

A spokesperson for the DA's office tells CNN these types of cases are often dismissed without charges if the debt is paid. So far, no word on whether Ashjian plans to settle up for the alleged debt.

This guy is a fraud, and has been denounced as such by the Tea Party.

The White House and this administration are full of felons and tax-cheats who are even more egregious than this fraud. When is CNN going to ‘get on that case?’

This guy is a total fraud. He set up his own “tea party” political “party” and declared himself it’s candidate. He has had nothing to do the the Tea Party movement in Nevada (nor anywhere else).

He refuses to say who is financing him. The Nevada Tea Party Express has denounced him from the beginning. He is trying to siphon off votes from Conservatives in our fight against Harry Reid.

CNN’s headline is totalling misleading (what else is new). He showed up at Searchlight followed by some CNN reporters (at his request). He shook a few hands with people who didn’t know who he was. He was there for a short while, then left.

The sooner this guy is exposed and nullified publicly the better.

The state is also looking into his party affiliation.

Although it is unclear, there seems to be some problem with his changing party affiliations too late to claim he is a "Tea Party" member in time for that designation to appear on the ballot.

He seems to have had a nifty auction racket. Before his license lapsed, he was a certified auctioneer. People would give him stuff to auction off; he would hold the auction; he would remunerate nothing or little to the owners of the property auctioned.

Besides the bounced check, the county and state are looking into other business licenses this con man may hold.

They know he is not a tea party candidate. Just like that gal from Tx running for Gov. said she was a tea party candidate and she wasn’t.

You have to be a felon, crook and/or fraud to be a politician.

Looks like he may indeed be a plant. Writing a bad check probably done deliberately in order to get the press coverage and link him publically and negatively to the TP movement.

I don't know if writing a bad check was some planned thing, but I do know that the Tea Party movement has been clearly stating that he's never been a part of the movement and in no way is he some sort of founder of the movement. he's just a guy that registered a web page with Tea Party in the name and is making false claims...and rather by intent or not he's a useful idiot for the MSM.

The guy is aphony but the check thing is BS. In the commercial construction bidness a lot of 'bad checks' are written.

You are told you will get paid on day 'x' so you write a check or three for day 'x'. But when 'x' comes you don't get YOUR money so checks start bouncing.

Many moon ago I worked for a HUGH company and come payday I'd go straight to the bank to cash my paycheck. Well, surprise -- there was no money in the account. A Manger was called over and I was told every week the Co floated a loan to cover payroll and the loan for that week hadn't went through yet. The Bank Manager had to approve my check, which he did. And we're talking BIG money about $250,000. every week. They had millions in receivables on the books but nobody wanted to pay.

In Commercial Construction the Contractor & Subcontractor plays Finance Co for the Owner or GC. And the lower you are on the ladder, the longer it takes to get YOUR MONEY.

So a $5K check is peanuts.

'Heck', it even happened to me, I was given a check, about $2,200 and asked to 'hold it' for a few days - which I did, I then deposited it. Well it bounced, my contractor didn't get his money on time. But no harm no foul, he gave me a new check a couple days later that was good.

Harry probably paid him 20K to write a 5K bad check-AND he’ll be paving every driveway in Harry’s district.

To me, in the grand scheme of things and the gajillions of dollars the criminals in DC have spent-before they printed it-$5k for this guy and the $1900 from the other “big” RNC scandal-is just ridiculous.

This is really a stretch-TP, RNC or otherwise.

If he wrote bogus checks weekly AND was printing his own money, then I would be interested.

This is much ado about nothing.

Ashjian has his fingers in a lot of pies, at least on paper. But to be accurate, the auction racket is his brother-in-law's business, not Scott Ashjian’s. Ashjian’s sister, Romy, is divorced from her husband. I can't determine how recent the divorce was, but according to the newspaper report they are still working together. The husband's last name is Deiro. Deiro’s father, who has a good reputation in the state, sold the business to his son and is currently estranged from him. The father feels that his son has dishonored the family name.

I don't think we can honestly fault Ashjian for his ex brother-in-laws moral lapses. However, I do find it relevant that his sister Romy is registered as one of the Executive Committee Members on the document Ashjian filed with Nevada for the Tea Party.

re: writing bad checks

In the example you gave, you and everyone else made good on the checks shortly thereafter. That is not the case with Ashjian. He still hasn't made good on any bounced checks, and it has been months.

Yet he thinks nothing of running for the Senate where he will be responsible for taxpayer money. Now, I could understand it if he were running as a Democrat. That would not been usual, but Ashjian has voiced disgust with both parties. He claims that neither are conservative enough for him!
