A GREAT-grandmother has been electronically tagged, placed under curfew and fined £1,000 for selling a GOLDFISH to a 14-year-old boy.
Pet shop owner Joan Higgins, 66, landed the punishment after mistakenly selling the tiny fish to a schoolboy.
The pensioner failed to spot that the lad was under the age of 16 as required by law to buy a pet and fell foul of a sting by trading standards officers.

LOL!!
Unfortunately, Britain is not part of the "free world".
No, 1: a goldfish is not an animal. It's a FISH.
No.2: If a 14 year old in England isn't considered old enough to take care of a goldfish, what does that say for England.
Truly, the world has gone mad...braindead.
So in Britian, when you go into a pet store, do they have some stupid threatening sign next to the cash register:
IT’S THE LAW!!!
BORN AFTER April 1st 1998?
NO GOLDFISH SALES!
WE CARD!
At our local YMCA by the tea and coffee stand there’s a big sign saying “WARNING: not for use for people 16 years old or younger!” all official-like.
I asked the clerk why young teenagers weren’t allowed to get tea, hot chocolate or coffee for themselves and she replied “We’re afraid they’re going to burn themselves.”
Wow! In some states 14 year olds can drive farm machinery, run chainsaws and shoot rifles. And in all states I assume they can take hot showers, wash their hands in hot water and cook eggs for themselves on hot stoves, but in Oregon they can’t be trusted to pour a cup of hot water for making tea!

A fish is not an animal? You are one hell of a debater.
Stupid.
Goldfish Swallowing
Or reason No. 452 why you should never let your elders claim that kids were more mature "in their day." On March 3, 1939, Harvard freshman Lothrop Withington, Jr., touched off a firestorm of publicity and imitators when he swallowed a goldfish on a $10 bet. For the next three months, students sucked down goldfish in record numbers while every authority figure from the Massachusetts State Senate to the U.S. Public Health Service tried to get them to stop. The craze slowed down after many schools threatened to expel the fish eaters, but the stunt managed to remain popular enough to ensnare the next generation. The current world record, 300 fish in one sitting, was set in 1974.
“By then they should be drinking ale and chasing birds...”
Birds? When I was stationed at RAF Lakenheath (1967...1970) I kept hearing the blokes calling girls birds. I guess they still do. LOL!
