What Do Students Want to Know about President Obama’s Higher-Ed Agenda?

Posted by Macon Phillips on March 30, 2010 at 07:32 PM EDT

I wanted to point out something different we are trying out: an effort to connect with college newspapers across the country and get questions directly from students about the Obama Administration’s higher-ed agenda. Next week, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and the chair of the President’s Domestic Policy Council, will answer questions in a special live chat from the White House. We are working with the Huffington Post’s network of college newspapers on the first phase and they give a run-down on the next steps:

This is how it will work: Through our extensive network of college papers, students will submit questions to HuffPost College, which the entire HuffPost community will vote on.

The top questions will be asked during the live chat — and the editor of the school paper with the highest-rated question will be flown to the White House to interview top Obama officials.

This new type of interview process is exciting, but the real news is what happened today when President Obama signed the Healthcare and Education Reconciliation legislation. With the stroke of his pen, our Nation expanded the Pell Grant program, invested more in community colleges, increased support for minority serving institutions and ended wasteful subsidies in the student loan system that will free up nearly $68 billion dollars for college affordability and deficit reduction over the next 11 years. Whew!

Also, don’t miss this great video from Dr. Jill Biden, who gives a good overview of the policy impact of today and encourages parents to take note as they start planning now for a younger child’s higher education.

How many of these smart students voted for this commie? Those that did deserve what they get. No sympathy here.

I am sorry but I think that is a very short-sighted attitude...

There are many “smart kids” like my 3 who did not vote for him and don’t deserve this yet it may impact them. Many responsible middle class families who have had their careers, income, home values and other finances decimated in this economy and may not have the resources to send their kids to college—who did not vote for the dear leader and don’t deserve the socialism reigning down on them. It is hurting the entire country. We will all be paying for this as his policies impact everyone—even those not yet born.

"I don’t know about you, but just how many Obama shirts do you see compared to a year ago? ...........

Also, far fewer bumper stickers too. Only the hard core supporters still have them on around here!"

An Obamanoid bumper sticker I just put on my car : http://www.refusetocomply.com/gbook.php

“Up to now, 15 out of 19 million student loans were private loans, backed by the government,” Alexander says.

When the government is on the hook for them, they are government loans, Alexander. Banks simply got a cut of the action.

"Govt approved schools only"

Good point. Just a matter of time before any Christian affiliated school will be excluded on the basis of separation of church and state. I'm sure ACLU will sue in short order.

The interest on those loans looked way too much like “free money”. Considering the Obama needs a huge influx of cash from nearly tapped-out taxpayers, that’s one of the few options left.

Tho I have not had a lot of experience with college student loans, my son in grad school took out a small one—he went thru a local state bank (not a big one involved with the administration), which was a school-approved lender and is expected to pay it back. The government backing is if students default. Sorry, but given the socialization of our country, I would much prefer that the come from a bank and the profits/interest go to a bank than pay for our socialized healthcare program. IMHO, there is a difference.

Seems the loans need only be paid back at 10% of one’s discretionary income, and then are forgiven at 20 years.

Believe me I understand that he wants to take over everything and everything involved with healthcare bill.
I was just asking if the Gov was going to charge a higher interest rates than is currently being charged.
You should cut back on the coffee a bit.

6.8 % interest rate ? I thought student loans were currently at about 3 or 4%

I think they may vary yearly perhaps based on prime plus some factor, but yes I too thot they were lower, yet a friend of mine’s daughter has one at nearly 7%. She just got her house refinanced and will use a home equity loan to help fund her daughter’s education.
