Marine's Father Will Not Pay Court-Ordered Funeral Protesters' Fees
Fox News.com ^ | March 30, 2010 | The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The father of a Marine killed in Iraq whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters told Fox News he will defy a court order and not pay the protesters' appeal costs.

Albert Snyder, of York, Pa., told Fox News he does not intend to pay $16,510 to Fred Phelps, the leader of Kansas' Westboro Baptist Church, which held protests at Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder's funeral in 2006.

"I don't think I'm going to be writing a check until I hear from the Supreme Court," Snyder told Fox News on Tuesday. "I'm not about to pay them anything."

The Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered Snyder on Friday to pay Phelps. A two-page decision supplied by his attorneys offered no details on how the court came to its decision.

The decision adds "insult to injury," said Sean Summers, one of Snyder's attorneys.

Come on, folks. There’s got to be plenty of people who’d donate a few rolls of pennies each.

It would be a good thing in general if a charity was founded for the express purpose of providing funds for the defence of people who are the victims of leftist laws and/or court rulings. The manipulation of the justice system to crush conservative dissidents with financially crippling legal bills, or at worst, jail time is a tactic by the left that is often as effective as it is unjust...

then you better put up the entire judgment as a cash bond. If not, I'm sure Phelps knows how to execute on a judgment - attach all assets and have your home sold at sherrif's sale.

The only travesty of justice was the judge who decided to make the Marine’s family pay the phelps scum legal costs. There was no need for him to do that.

He should have just told phelps to be happy the decision was reversed and go pound sand.

One petty little tyrant judge with delusions of godhood had no business overturning the verdict in a legitimate jury trial. He spit in the faces of more than the Marine and his family.

I encountered many of those in the Phelps clan during one of their protests years ago. They are, indeed, one whacked-out group.

While I can’t condone violence, I’m surprised somebody hasn’t taken more aggressive action against this group. Perhaps someday they’ll run into somebody with nothing left to lose.

They don't have to go to those funerals. They go out of their way to go to them with the sole intent of inflicting emotional pain on the families of the deceased.

I agree........Like it or not tho, that is their right.

Good. First this man loses his brave son then he has to deal with this Fruit -n- Nut cake Phelps. Phelps is nothing but an attention whore and a looney tune. Why is the court encouraging this insanity? There was a day when the judge would tell Phelps&Co. to go have their heads examined. Bugger off! Now they are rewarded for harrassment? NUTS!

Judges persist in issuing orders that have no basis either in precedent or in the written constitutions they have sworn to defend.

Such judges need to be defied and they need to be impeached. Not obeyed.

I'm not a lawyer nor do I wish to get into a pissing contest with anyone here but it's quite possible that the judge was following the law and basing his legal opinion and the assessment of legal fees on some language that recognized this suite as unsubstantiated..........

Good for him. I’d be surprised if you’d find a jury in the world who would convict him. Jury nullification is still an option.

No jury would be involved. This is not a criminal case; the Court of Appeals ordered costs paid. If he doesn't pay, the U.S. Marshalls will garnish his bank account or seize his car.

Not only that, but a right to attend the funeral and inflict more emotional pain on a grieving family to boot.

The First Amendment protects people like the phelps, you know. The rest of us be damned.

We just have to learn to suck it up and live with it.

Uh, yea! If you are standing on a public street...........And if you were familiar with the MOA of the Phelps family, that is where they locate themselves............

A little bit of knowledge goes a long, long way.........
