Republican Senate candidates Tom Campbell and Chuck DeVore will debate at Brandman University in Irvine tonight, but candidate Carly Fiorina will be absent.
We felt the proposed moderator would not be fair and impartial so we declined, said Fiorinas spokeswoman, Amy Thoma. Initially, Fiorina said she could not participate because of a scheduling conflict, according to Thoma.
Moderator Mike Moodian, a Brandman University assistant professor of social science, said he offered to let Fiorina set a date when she could make it, but then the former Hewlett-Packard chief executive officer said the debate was too close to a League of Women Voters forum May 6.
Thoma accused Moodian of bullying Fiorina by including reporters on reply e-mails regarding the debate negotiations. Moodian acknowledged he copied 40 reporters on his memo to Fiorinas chief of staff but said he thinks Fiorina is ducking the debate.
Frankly, I dont think the public will buy that excuse, Moodian said. The questions are coming from the audience
The invitation is still open to them even if it means they dont want me as a moderator. Ill step down this moment.

DeVore and Campbell, a former congressman, like to think of themselves as policy wonks so theyre eager to take whatever questions come their way, they said.
I love all questions, DeVore said. I dont need any prep and frankly neither does Tom Campbell, which, frankly, is why Fiorina said no.
So, FReepers, WHICH of these candidates is the REAL COnservative? Or are there two? And if so, why are they going to split the Conservative vote and give the nomination to a moderate (Firorina..?)?
Like to hear some answers since I’m on the opposite coast from California (not that I’m upset about that!)
Carly’s policy appears to be: It is better to keep my mouth shut and be thought a fool than open my mouth and remove all doubt.
She’s handling this like she handled Hewlett Packard.
Seems like a prototypical case of the Peter Principle.
Chuck DeVore is the only true conservative, fiscally and socially, and has a record to back it up. Fiorina’s too much of a blank slate with a wad of cash, like Schwarzenegger and Meg Whitman (who is also trying to buy her way into a statewide election office). Campbell is more left-leaning, but at least more honest about his stances even if I don’t agree.
Affirmative Action
DeVore is the closest to being an actual conservative.
The other two are poseurs!
DeVore is the only conservative running. Fiorina is best known for screwing up HP, and Campbell is a RINO’s RINO.
“We felt the proposed moderator would not be fair and impartial so we declined, said Fiorinas spokeswoman, “
Oh, yea, she’s really ready for prime time!
We have to do better.
I want to like Carly and be enthusiastic about her campaign, but so far nothing is that impressive. DeVore doesn’t appear to be competitive.
My gut is that Campbell is the most electable of the three.
Yeah. I think they pushed her through the glass ceiling and damaged her head in the process.
May be something to this: photo of "impartial moderator Mike Moodian" and a casual guy from the neighborhood friend.
but then the former Hewlett-Packard chief executive officer said the debate was too close to a League of Women Voters forum May 6.
Today is March 30th, is it not? Is Columbus Day also too close to Christmas for Ms. Fiorina??
I was waiting for somebody to comment on that. I’m still scratching my head on that one.
Here are a few of Moodian’s tweets:

# @erichogue @Jstrevino She may have an unfair advantage. You should ask local reporters to be present as she answers questions. 1:02 PM Feb 28th via web in reply to erichogue
# @erichogue @Jstrevino Gentlemen, how will you prevent Fiorina from referring to her notes (or consulting with advisors) during the debate?
DeVore has the tea party endorsement and is conservative. He will (should) get the conservative vote in the primary, but that will not be enough I am afraid. So it will be one of the other two, both RINO’s.
But I hate to say it if they win it is a ‘block’ of a very liberal seat (witch boxer), so not a great thing but also not a bad thing.
If the conservative states would quite electing liberal rats we would have a super majority in the senate with mostly conservatives. Liberal states (CA, MA, ME) would them be RINO’s but more important NOT liberals.
After Carly’s reign at HP, I quit buying HP products.
ROTFLMAO!!! And I though making lots of money destroying two major technology corporations automatically made one a policy authority.
Silly me.
