an African-American is anyone who was born in Africa, immigrated to the U.S., and became an American citizen. This definition includes a few races, so whether someone is an African-American can’t be determined by his or her skin color.

Finn Aagaard, the late gunwriter, falls into this category. He was born in Kenya (ironically) and moved to the U.S., so even though he was as white as the day is long, he was an African-American.

I believe the actress Charlize Theron has occasionally been called "African American" as a bit of humor -- she was born in South Africa -- but people get really upset about it. And when I say "people", I mean blacks.

Those factoids are from the 2005 Republican Freedom Calendar, which Michael Zak wrote for the House Policy Committee. They are drawn from his book Back to Basics for the Republican Party. See www.grandoldpartisan.com and www.republicanbasics.com for more information.
