I had to wince when I saw poor old John McCain last week, standing on stage with a constipated smile as his former running mate Sarah Palin threw him a bone.
It was a cringe-worthy sight. McCain is a true servant of his country, a former POW and presidential candidate. He is one of those people who has to qualify for the title of Great American.
And yet there he was, with that frozen rictus of a grin, silently begging to keep his job, as the woman he once plucked from obscurity magnanimously asked the crowd of Arizona Republicans to help him out.
About the same time as McCain was facing his antagonists, David Frum was being fired by the American Enterprise Institute, the conservative think-tank in Washington where he'd opined from the political right for years.
Frum, George W. Bush's former speechwriter, and McCain have a few things in common . . .

Yeah, their habit of sticking paring knives in conservatives' backs.
The headlines are so incendiary lately, putting a warning label on them would be redundant.
Juan est retiro!
Barack Obama, Frum pointed out, was elected with a strong majority and any talk of repealing these health-care reforms is deluded.
Entitlements like health care are instantly addictive, which means the law is here to stay, Frum argued.
I'll bet Obama's people don't sit around telling each other these luser lies.
"Oh, we can't do it, we should just give up." Yeah, right.
And if people like Frum never had the guts to stick with voter education to overcome the Rats' propaganda machine and "third rail" fetters on the public, then it's time they left public life to people who are willing to bring in new ideas like George W. Bush did with his attempt at Social Security reform and depoliticization.
But...but...but....those “spineless Republicans” we hear about so often won’t do anything! And there is no difference between the parties anyways! And...and...and...Palin endorsed Mccain (have you heard?) and...and...and...
True.
This guy really delivers for the home team. Sid "the Squid" Blumenthal never did a nastier hit piece than this guy put in his last few 'grafs.
Basically, he called the Tea Party people hypocrites (they "want" Medicare and other entitlements) and thereby tried to stand their motivations on end.
So which is it -- they're bennie-snaffling socialists or hooded Kluxer rioters? The author is showing us a certain inability to make up his mind which hate-puppet he wants to wave around more.
Both are more interested in fiscal and national security issues than in gay marriage or abortion or prayer in schools; and both tend to shun demagoguery for rational debate, which nowadays makes any Republican a candidate for the Tea Party's rub-out list.
This sneer/smear/roorback/lie is of a little more interest. It's the same one retailed by journopolemicist Theodore White in his Making of the President books about the campaigns of the 60's. White repeatedly referred to conservative GOP'ers as "primitives" and attributed their passion -- and their policy positions -- to "emotions". He repeated that formula so many times, that the outline of his canard became obvious even to the densest reader.
Of course, those "primitives" got their vindication, and stripped White's paradigm barkless, when they made Ronald Wilson Reagan the 40th President of the United States, and by a landslide to boot.
I agree... I bet they don't.
John McCain graduated 5th from the bottom of his military class. His political life mirrors the same John McCain. His tragic loss of aircraft lends itself to this same less-than-qualified mentality. His spinning compass mindset is simply dangerous for the country.
So???? What does that have to do with constantly attacking each other? John Mc Cain is history.... you need to move beyond that and realize we have to be ready to go after the real enemy and it isn’t McCain...
Pure hatred. Pure-dimensional hatred, spite, and ..... well, hate and more hate, the 99-molal nitric acid of pure polemic.
What could prompt a white Canadian to gloat and bait readers with Hillaryesque identity-political cues like that? As being evil people because of what they are, when all the evidence is to the contrary, viz., that they are nothing of the sort of Nazified racists that he paints them as?
What works as an explanation is that he's a Leftist of some kind -- Communist, homosexual, whatever -- working his grift, smearing the Tea Party people as Kluxers and misogynistic anti-semitic bigots, and anything else that comes to hand, to work his propaganda and force his "dialectic" on people and destroy the Tea Partiers' ability to resist Obammunism's incipient minoritarian-totalitarian regime, which history shows is precisely the kind that kills people in round lots of 1,000,000.
Hey Rabs, Mk, and SJB, she ain’t a RINO, she was just “throwin him a bone”. We just don’t understand politics. That’s why we get mad and throw her under the bus. She will crawl out from under the bus where we threw her to save our sorry asses. I hope we can all be grateful when this happens.
I read somewhere, too, that it was also put forward -- subsidized a la George Soros -- by plutocratic and cynical French millionaires including De Sade, who wanted the Revolution to destroy every institution that could bring a bill of indictment against their pleasure-seeking and self-indulgent, amoral solipsism.
Men striving to be their own gods, as usual.
Yale President Timothy Dwight, The Duty of Americans at the Present Crisis (1798):
In the societies of Illuminati doctrines were taught, which strike at the root of all human happiness and virtue; and every such doctrine was either expressly or implicitly involved in their system. At the end of the essay Dwight writes of "the miserable inhabitants" of Neuwied, Germany. It was a stable, prosperous beautiful town. Then the agitators came in, convinced enough people the prince was corrupt and they were oppressed. They lost everything. A French General told them, "We have left you your eyes with which to cry".The being of God was denied and ridiculed.
Government was asserted to be a curse, and authority a mere usurpation.
Civil society was declared to be the only apostasy of man.
The possession of property was pronounced to be robbery.
Chastity and natural affection were declared to be nothing more than groundless prejudices.
Adultery, assassination, poisoning, and other crimes of the like infernal nature, were taught as lawful, and even as virtuous actions.
To crown such a system of falshood and horror all means were declared to be lawful, provided the end was good.
. . .men are not only loosed from every bond, and from every duty; but from every inducement to perform any thing which is good, and, abstain from any thing which is evil; and are set upon each other, like a company of hellhounds to worry, rend, and destroy . . .
The names by which this society was enlarged, and its doctrines spread, were of every promising kind. With unremitted ardour and diligence the members insinuated themselves into every place of power and trust, and into every literary, political and friendly society; engrossed as much as possible the education of youth, especially of distinction; became licensers of the press, and directors of every literary journal; waylaid every foolish prince, every unprincipled civil officer, and every abandoned clergyman . . .
Look for conviction to Belgium; sunk into the dust of insignificance and meanness, plundered, insulted, forgotten, never to rise more. See Batavia wallowing in the same dust; the butt of fraud, rapacity, and derision, struggling in the last stages of life, and searching anxiously to find a quiet grave. See Venice sold in the shambles, and made the small change of a political bargain. Turn your eyes to Switzerland, and behold its happiness, and its hopes, cut off at a single stroke: happiness, erected with the labour and the wisdom of three centuries; hopes, that not long since hailed the blessings of centuries yet to come. What have they spread, but crimes and miseries; Where have they trodden, but to waste, to pollute, and to destroy?
All connection with them has been pestilential. Among ourselves it has generated nothing but infidelity, irreligion, faction, rebellion, the ruin of peace, and the loss of property.
There is no Illuminati conspiracy today. There is no need for it. The Illuminati won a long time ago.
They say that society, if left to itself, runs headlong to ruin, because its instincts are perverse. They claim for themselves the credit of arresting it in this downward course and guiding it in a better direction. Have they then received from heaven intelligence and virtues which place them outside of and above humanity? If so, let them show their credentials. They wish to be the shepherds, while we constitute their flock. This arrangement presupposes in them a superior nature, of which, before admitting it, we have very good right to demand the proof. We do not by any means deny them the right of inventing social combinations, of urging and extending their adoption, and of testing them upon themselves at their own expense and risk; we merely deny their right to impose these combinations upon us by means of the law, that is to say, by means of force, and of public contributions.
How George Bernard Shaw like of Macdonald. Maybe he would prefer “a humane gas that will kill instantly... humane not cruel...” for the “snarling white mobs”.
