The Gulf Stream does not appear to be slowing down, say US scientists who have used satellites to monitor tell-tale changes in the height of the sea.
Confirming work by other scientists using different methodologies, they found dramatic short-term variability but no longer-term trend.
A slow-down - dramatised in the movie The Day After Tomorrow - is projected by some models of climate change.
The research is published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
The stream is a key process in the climate of western Europe, bringing heat northwards from the tropics and keeping countries such as the UK 4-6C warmer than they would otherwise be.
It forms part of a larger movement of water, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, which is itself one component of the global thermohaline system of currents.
Between 2002 and 2009, the team says, there was no trend discernible - just a lot of variability on short timescales.
The satellite record going back to 1993 did suggest a small increase in flow, although the researchers cannot be sure it is significant.
"The changes we're seeing in overturning strength are probably part of a natural cycle," said Josh Willis from Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California.

So that wasn’t the cause of temperatures going down over the Winter? And what about temperatures warming up now? Please, someone, tell me there’s a good explanation for this scary trend of warming temperatures ever since March 21.
;-)
There is a good explanation.
We're doomed. DOOMED!
Just give up and go curl up in a ball in the corner right now.
*snif* I want my Mommy!
;)
BBC fearmongering.
Not only that, it was in the 60s overnight but may reach as high as 80 today. Why if these trends continue, it could be 100 by nightfall!
That would be the model they trot out when global warming makes it colder and snowier.
They use one of the other climate models if its warm and wet, and another if there's a drought.
Scientists used to form theories about the world, and if those theories did not match the data, they would change the theories. Today, if their data do not match the theory, they change the data.
40 years ago, they told us we were headed into a new Ice Age and man was the reason.
Now they tell us we are headed into rising temperatures and man is the reason.
Either we averted an Ice Age or the scientists are full of crap.
I would have your AC serviced to be safe...
Scientists change their theories based on who is paying them. They are now the least trusted profession outside of government.
Remember, “the climate has nothing to do with the weather.”
I actually read that this week by a climate guy.
I thought they were talking about Al Gore’s Gulfstream.
I’m going to run my air conditioner with the windows open to help cool the planet.
Make sure you open windows opposite each other. If not the rush of air in the wrong direction could slow down or speed up the rotation of the earth, causing all sorts of problems..
“Please, someone, tell me theres a good explanation for this scary trend of warming temperatures ever since March 21.”
Bush’s fault.
Duh.
And do they really expect us to believe empirical data instead of the computer models? I’m calling BS on this. The risk is just too great. We have to address the problem even though there is no evidence of a problem....more regulation should do the trick.
/sarcasm off
