For the South Korea to publicly admit that they lost a modern naval vessel with Harpoon missiles and dozens of crew members to a North Korean mine, torpedo would mean War.
Therefore, you will not hear much about this story ever again.
It goes to show you how poor early reporting can be. When the story broke, it was reported that it was a calm night.
In any event, even 9-10 footers shouldn't compromise the structural integrity of a 1,200 tonnes warship, and certainly not one built in the late '80s.
Any links to pics of the wreck?
However, I doubt the Norks could put a sub that close without detection by "other" forces in the area (wink wink) and fire a torpedo...and make a run for it...and nobody detected them? Possible. Not likely.
I vote mine. Norks dropped off a few mines in the area they warned about and pulled away to watch for a few days/weeks.
One possibility is that the S. Koreans were doing something with some kind of explosive that they don’t want anyone else to know about and things went wrong for them.
Seems difficult to believe the area would be mined. The rescue boats would have known about them.
A torpedo or some kind of shaped charged placed there by the North would be more likely.
Don’t think the South will blow the situation up over one ship.
Internal explosion caused by the spontaneous combustion of coal next to the magazine.
Remember the Maine!
if they can't, we can.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMAS_Torrens_(DE_53):
"HMAS Torrens (DE 53) was a River class destroyer escort of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Built as a replacement for HMAS Voyager, Torrens entered service in 1971, and was active until her decommissioning in 1998.
"The ship was sunk as a target by HMAS Farncomb in June 1999. Images and footage of the ship sinking have been used and adapted for various purposes, including in movies and as propaganda."
