It used to be that no one could immigrate to the U.S. unless they had a sponsor. Obviously that no longer is the case.

The "zero tax liability" concept is somewhat deceitful because it doesn't count welfare payments thinly disguised as negative income taxes. I read a few weeks back that, if you sum up people with NEGATIVE taxes and zero tax liability (ie, EITC), then the bottom 60% pay NO income tax. We are truly at a "tipping point."

I think you’re correct. We are not an immoral society if our government does not pay for all citizens’ medical care. I only meant that it would be humane it were cheap.

Universal medical care makes sense to me only if every able-bodied citizen pays the same premium with no subsidies except for the truly disabled. Of course the premium would have to be very low for this to work, which won’t happen.
