Gov. David Paterson ordered a hard hiring freeze in state government nearly two years ago, declaring that only absolutely essential positions be filled.
But state officials hired 51,464 people at a cost to taxpayers of more than $1 billion in salaries, plus fringe benefits, since that decree on July 30, 2008.
The hires include sons of elected officials, a close friend of the governors and a slew of highly paid political appointees.
Former Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll, for example, makes $155,000 a year in an environmental job the governor created for him. Paterson hired an executive assistant at $178,000 a year, a special assistant at $135,000 a year and a scheduler at $105,000 a year. A man responsible for blogging and tweeting for the Senate was hired by the Democratic majority at $120,000 a year.
Other state agencies hired photography assistants, tree pruners and ski school instructors, often with approval from Patersons Division of Budget.
Two summers ago, Paterson announced a hard hiring freeze as the nations economy soured and the states budget gap grew.

I remember my Mom & Dad saying that when I was a kid growing up in Ithaca and outside Syracuse...and that was the late 50s and early 60s.
I'm sure it will happen this time. Snick.

Cuomo's proposed cuts are a joke.

1.Sleep on the job.
2.Surf porn while at work.
3.Pick nose.
4.Show up at union protests when any benefits or salaries are cut.
You just don't qualify for a $120,000 a year job.
No wonder NY is going broke. Go back to 1970’s spending and appropriate levels of government employees.
QUICK FIX: Make the government unions illegal and you will find lots of new private sector workers as the so-called “benefits” of the rich union contracts eliminated. It would also take out the money laundering of government unions taking money from government programs and then donating it to the Democrap party.
Electrical engineers rock! You’re priceless to me; who knows how inconvenient and less sanitary life would be without all the excellent enhancements powered by electrical controls. No joke! I’d be fine if I had to go without parasitic bureaucrats but would be lost without the plans, designs & constructed works of engineers (electrical, structural, civil, transportation, etc.), for sure.
