Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R) and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty (R) have both now confirmed that they will not attend the Southern Republican Leadership Conference (SRLC), which is taking place April 8-11 in New Orleans.
Their absence is notable in the sense that they are the two who have been most noticeably planning for a run in 2012 and this is a chance to speak to a major group of conservative activists.
Pawlenty had been scheduled to attend and was even advertised on the website as a featured speaker. The Minnesota Governor has pulled out however to attend the homecoming of about 1,200 troops returning from Iraq to Minnesota.
However, plenty of other Republicans will take the opportunity to speak at the conference. Among the speakers: Former Alaska Governor and Fox News contributor Sarah Palin (R), Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal (R), Newt Gingrich (R), House GOP Conference Chair Mike Pence (R-In), Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour (R) and former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa).

Mitt and Newt. What kind of name is that for a grown man?
But I digress. Watch for whomever the press starts to kiss up to in the GOP, like they used to do with McCain. Thats who they will try to force on us as a candidate, someone who has no chance to win against the dems.
Yup. I think this is at the bottom of their abdication. They know that they will be seriously upstaged by Sarah. And on their part, it's probably a wise decision.
An astute observation. I believe you are correct. Unless the press decides to push Romney and or Pawlenty as "moderates" who didn't get sucked in to evil conservative ideas, instead.
I think they’ve already settled on Romney, with Pawlenty in the wings as his backup.
She’s appearing? So they won’t. Kinda funny. And pathetic.
Or VP.
I'll take you one better, +Front Page News
Yes, that may be Pawlenty’s consolation prize.
>> I think this answers once and for all the question of who is conservative and who is NOT.
Not sure attending a concon makes it so.
Did anyone watch the “Who Are These ‘Ron Paul People’” video @ SRLC’s Facebook page? It was awesome!
In that grand old Republican tradition of Dole and McCain, its Rommeys TURN to run for Prez. Its not a very winning tradition.
I don’t think it’s his TURN. I don’t really see the Republican establishment pushing for him. All I see is the liberal gay MSM pushing for him and whatever Romney can buy.
“He is probably a democrat operative.”
LOL, I don’t think that is the case.
But I do think it would be dreadful if he was nominated. It would be another “next in line RINO” nomination, like McCain was, like Dole was.
I think we need our own Obama, somebody new, somebody young, somebody nice looking and media savy.
True, but I think NOT attending is a pretty good signal.
Ha! Neither is a conservative - and especially RINOMITT
“Watch for whomever the press starts to kiss up to in the GOP, like they used to do with McCain. Thats who they will try to force on us as a candidate, someone who has no chance to win against the dems.”
Exactly. When will the Republican Party faithful learn that the media is “choosing” our candidate for us - someone who cannot win, whom they will fawn over during the primaries and eviscerate in the general election?
Remember all the positive media attention John McCain received in the 1980 primaries with his “straight talk express”? The media were falling all over him. Why? Because they were hoping he would topple front runner -and more conservative - George Bush. Fast forward to the 2008 general election. Those same media sycophants were nowhere to be seen. Why? They had no more use for McCain and were busy making sure Obama was elected.
We are seeing a replay of the same scenario in 2010 with Romney. The positive and respectful coverage of Romney by the MSM is a shameless attempt at manipulation. Beware.
While I’m at it, also beware that Romney has two powerful forces at his disposal. The first is his vast personal wealth, which gives him an advantage over his competition (redux Nelson Rockefeller). The second is the Mormon Church, which will be 100% behind him. The danger here is that this army of dedicated volunteers will work to sway the outcome and exaggerate Romney’s popular appeal. Make no mistake about it, disciplined and ideologically-committed Mormons in lock step with Romney can exercise an inordinate influence in the primaries to sway the outcome.
“Romney & Pawlenty to Skip Conservative Conf”
Why would they be there?
He want’s to be the next McCain. Get nominated due to open primaries. He believes he will be elected as the nation will have had enough of Obama by then.
Enough of us will vote for whomever the GOP nominee is just to rid ourselves of the menace in the WH.....and Mitt is banking on that.
I don't blame Pawlenty for making that decision.
Juvenile.
They think that if they don’t go to this party then everyone think it wasn’t a good party.
