Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R) and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty (R) have both now confirmed that they will not attend the Southern Republican Leadership Conference (SRLC), which is taking place April 8-11 in New Orleans.
Their absence is notable in the sense that they are the two who have been most noticeably planning for a run in 2012 and this is a chance to speak to a major group of conservative activists.
Pawlenty had been scheduled to attend and was even advertised on the website as a featured speaker. The Minnesota Governor has pulled out however to attend the homecoming of about 1,200 troops returning from Iraq to Minnesota.
However, plenty of other Republicans will take the opportunity to speak at the conference. Among the speakers: Former Alaska Governor and Fox News contributor Sarah Palin (R), Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal (R), Newt Gingrich (R), House GOP Conference Chair Mike Pence (R-In), Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour (R) and former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa).

Note to admin mods. This is a Fox News blog. I think there is enough news value here to justify a New/Activision presence.
So why is he running? He can't win and he knows it. He is a spoiler. He is probably a democrat operative.
Too bad Newt didnt drop out.....it would have been a Liberal RINO trifecta of dropouts
Maybe Dede Schizzofava needs some help, Newt....
Romney and Pawlenty are afraid to appear at the same event as Sarah Palin. They know who’s the real conservative atar in the Republican party.
Sorry, guys....it's early AM.
this tells me that the Republican leadership still doesnt get it....they are still in the good old boys club.
He knows he can siphon off disaffected "centrist" democratic voters who have had enough of Obama. That's why he is running and it's why he won't appear at this conference. He can't get those voters if he runs too far right.
The last I heard he has not made up his mind to run. I agree with you that he cannot win. He is skipping the conference because he knows that conservatives link his MA HC efforts to those of Obama and the federal HC legislation. He will be hiding in the bunker.
It is time for conservatives to leave NEWT off the speakers list. 1. Any man that cheats on two wives with cheat his party. 2. Any man that parties and makes nice with Nancy P. will cheat on his party. 3. Newt is part of the corrupt big spender Abramoff, Delay wing of the party. 4.Did I mention cheaters?
They know that by 2012, there will be Conservatives (i.e. the People) and there will be Republicans (i.e. the corporatist elite). The GOP is making this fact very clear to us.
They are choosing their side.
We all lose in the end, but the elites would rather face 20 years in the wilderness than turn control over to the People.
Damn....and I was ready to play Pitfall, too.
Sweet, anyone up for a game of Castlevania?
Bears repeating.
It's hard for a pretend conservative to keep up the act when the real thing is available for direct comparison.
Newt is old news.
He should just go away.
Don’t know much about Pawlenty, but Romney can sleep with the same fish that I’d McKennedy to sleep with.
Romney, just go ahead and declare yourself a dim-bulb-crat and run with McKennedy.
And who’s afraid of Sarah Palin and who’s not.
Romney should skip the 2012 election!
Newt. *snickers*
You forgot Newt being an global warming/Al Gore disciple.
