NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- It's official: Californians will decide whether legal marijuana should be used to plug the state's $20 billion budget gap.
California residents are expected to vote this year on whether legalization should be approved to raise nearly $1.4 billion in state revenue.
...."With the state in the midst of an historic economic crisis, the move towards regulating and taxing marijuana is simply common sense," Ammiano said [the bill's sponsor]

It's slow, messy and difficult to brew or distill your own booze.
But anyone with a 10x20 plot and a temperate climate can grow a nice batch of weed for personal use.
There will be hundreds of agents working for the garden NKVD within a year of passage.
MJ being harmless is an urban myth.
It is a BF deal. MJ is not a healthy thing to smoke. Lung cancer, bronchitus, destruction of lung tissue leading to COPS can result from its use. Ammotivational syndrome will cause user to be underproductive.
And now they are telling me I have to provide health care for some hippie who won't take care of themself? This is not going to end well. I simply will oppose this with everthing legal I can muster.
If this passes, pot will be easy to buy in CA!!
We will notice the difference....how????
If this passes, it will be interesting to read the comments on FR from the “it’s the will of the voters” crowd.
The replies split about as expected. Me, I’m for it, but keep DUI rules in place and let businesses fire you if you’re stoned. What you do on the weekends away from a steering wheel is nobody’s business but your own.
The WOD has been a major civil liberties disaster. Look at the Mexican gangs, look at civil forfeiture abuses by the cops. Legalization would take a lot of the funding and profit motivation away for abuses of the mostly (except for this) law abiding populace.
You think there’s a “War on Drugs” now, just wait until it is legalized and taxed. The government isn’t going to give up all that potential tax revenue without a fight.
I might have a new “con” for you: Vote NO because it feeds the beast in Sacramento. They REFUSE to cut spending and think they can make it up with new feel-good (yeah dude) taxes.
What if you don’t smoke it?
So the government should prohibit people from doing things simply because they are not healthy?
Well, you can make your own beer and wine without taxes now. As long as it is under a certain amount it probably will allowed.
Sure. Usually the "drug" test gives a blood alcohol level too and it's perfectly legal to use a nonzero BAC as a reason not to hire somebody.
I ask one question: How many cancer patients have endured wasting and pain because they refused to smoke cannabis, because of fear of prosecution? How many aids patients? How many arthritis sufferers go to bed, unable to sleep because of the pain? Cannabis is not medicine—it will not heal you, but it helps get you past the pain.
I suspect pot will be the next “Acorn” slush fund created by Democrats.
Bingo!
Sex with anything, pay for every whim, smoke or shoot-up anything, and tax every success...what could be wrong with a culture like that.
If you got the impression that I am opposed to legalizing marijuana, I apologize. I am 100% in favor.
"Let" businesses fire you if you're stoned?
I don't mean to be nit-picky towards you (sorry if it comes across that way), but that very word choice illustrates what is, IMO, the basic problem with his whole debate: lack of respect for Private Property Rights.
Private Property Rights are one of the cornerstones of Biblical Law. In the Bible, drunkenness (the particular form of intoxicant doesn't really matter) is a Moral Sin, but Trespassing is a Civil Crime. When did we get the idea that it's "okay" for us to bust down people's doors in the middle of the night and invade their property to prevent them from smoking a particular type of cigarette to which we might have a personal moral objection? Certainly not from the Bible. That's not "morality", that's Trespassing! It's not "conservatism", it's a sin!
But the exact same principle applies to the Private Property of owning your own business -- if it's your business, and you own it, then of course you have (and should have) the right to fire an employee if he's stoned, or for that matter even if you just don't like the color of his hair!!
Ha.
I read a story on FR a while back about a 16-year old driver who was stopped by a cop and showed his medical pot card and was let go. Even the cops know better.
Then again, its California.
I’d like to know why anyone thinks pot is a real medical product?? real medical products have specific purposes and aren’t touted as cure-alls.
Then again this is a state that thinks nudist camps for teens without no parents allowed are good and wholesome. 12 year old girls and 18 year old boys running around naked... what bad could happen right?? Also lets point out that the camps could be showing them hardcore porn without breaking any laws too.
The state is bankrupt. Cities controlled by Mexican gangs. They have lost 30,000 businesses in about 5 or 10 years.
Hey, lets give that well run state a hand.
