Did Romney Endorse Federal Mandate? (Death Knell video for Mitt?)
The Plum Line ^ | 3-25-10 | Greg Sargent

The DNC has a new Web vid out mocking Mitt Romney’s increasingly contorted positions on the individual mandate. As you know, he backs it on the state level as rooted in conservative principles (a la Romneycare), but he’s been warning that implementing it on the Federal level (a la Obamacare) constitutes a frightening abuse of power that conservatives everywhere should resist.

But, unless I’m missing something, the DNC appears to have unearthed video of Romney, during the 2008 GOP presidential primary, coming very close to endorsing the Federal mandate. The key bit comes at around 45 seconds in:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6DrH6P9OC0&feature=player_embedded

Here’s the key exchange:

MODERATOR: “You seem to have backed away from mandates on a national basis.”

ROMNEY: “No, no, I like mandates. The mandates work.”

To be clear, the individual mandate wasn’t the lightening rod for the right back then that it is these days. Romney appears to have merely been trying to appear consistent on the issue. But now that Obamacare has elevated the issue into an important one on the right, Romney is depicting the Federal mandate as a frightening abuse of power.

All this said, in a way the details of Romney’s position, or positions, aren’t really the point. Rather, the real problem for Romney here is that every time he goes on TV to bash Obamacare, he’s going to be asked to explain why he’s slamming a provision he signed into law himself.

All the explaining, of course, feeds the same storyline about his ideological malleability that did him in the last time.

Ouch. No wonder the MSM wants Romney as the nominee so badly, and you can't find a negative word about him anywhere in the Mainstream Press. One wonders just how many completely devastating videos of Mitt Romney are actually out there!

I supported Romney over McCain (pretty much a no brainer).

But he had his shot, now it’s time for a fresh face.

Romney’s lack of credibility is making the rest of us look bad because he is putting himself out there as if he’s a leader.

He’s not.

He’s just another politician who will say anything, do anything, to move up the ladder to the next highest office.

Romney is poison

He’s for and he’s against and then he is for - its what you call a flip flopper! He did Massachusetts much harm and I would never vote for this man!

Yup, and then they will trash him like they did McCain.

Some people in the GOP just don’t get it.

"He’s just another politician who will say anything, do anything, to move up the ladder to the next highest office."

And if you can't trust what he says, you don't know what his values are. And if you don't know what his values are, you don't know if he will even implement the platform he runs on, much less how he will react to non-platform issues.

Oh, I know what his values are -- it's "whatever's best for Mitt Romney". You can use that core value as a pretty good barometer of how he'll act in any given situation.

The scary part is all the people here at FR that were taking the side of the same crap that Zero just passed now to support this bucket of slop.

HAVE EITHER McCAIN or ROMNEY REMOVED THEIR STAFFERS
WHO ATTACKED Gov. PALIN and her CHILDREN on the EVE
of ELECTION 2008, throwing the Election to Obama?

No, they have not. Not a word of it. Nothing. Zip.

Why? Because Romney and McCain directed/condoned/
/encouraged/paid/promoted/endorsed their
staffers to attack the GOP Candidate and her children.

If the GOP holds true to form, Romney will be their presidential candidate in 2012.

I think/hope "true to form" will be tossed out the window. We'll see...

Romney looks the part...

And Romney can talk...

He just comes across as a used car salesman...

Not to mention he's been a hunter, a trapper, a skeet shooter, a fisherman, a gun enthusiast, a military supporter, and for abortion, before he was against it, and for more government, before he was against it...etc..etc..

Not that I agree with what he did, but I’m having a hard time figuring out if he was talking about his Mass. plan or if he actually wanted to pass mandates if he became President. I never heard him say that’s what the Feds should do, and there is a constiutional difference.

Don’t get me wrong. I never liked him, and for all I care he can pack his RINO butt back to Mass. and stay there. But in all fairness, I never heard him say that and they might just be trying to put words in his mouth.

Mitt Romney: ”Now that Romneycare is national, a little self examination
may be in order for you FReepers.
You may want to ask yourself “if I had spent my time promoting
RomneyCare and Mitt Romney , could I have garnered more support
of Obama and Mitt Romney?“

“Romney praises Obama
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney praised President Obama
at a GOP fundraising dinner Wednesday ..
"I also think it's important for us to nod to the president when he's right," Romney said....
Romney, who spoke at a dinner for the National Republican Senatorial Committee,
said he's pleased with the president's plans to "finish the job" in Iraq and Afghanistan
-- lines that drew applause from the partisan audience. He also applauded the president
for standing up to the auto industry.
"I hope he continues to be tough ....The former businessman even offered faint praise for
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, saying that after a series of initial missteps,
"I think he's finally getting close to the right answer."

Mitt Romney is the exact opposite of the candidate we need. He is the only Republican tainted with supporting a universal health plan. THE ONLY ONE.

He’s uniquely unqualified.

Fuggedabouthim.

I believe that he would not issue executive orders to rescind the mandates or even vote to substantively repeal 0bamacare if elected. That exchange with Fred Thompson was the most revealing.Romney wants “wealthy” people to have insurance or “put enough money away” if they have a catastrophic medical need. That is a mandate to have a personal health care fund.
I hope this helps to knock this guy down. We must knock him down early. We have got to get Rush and Levin to start slamming him because we don’t need McCain II.
