The pitched battle over health care has unleashed a rash of vandalism and attacks directed at politicians, with at least 10 House Democrats reporting death threats or incidents of harassment or vandalism at their district offices over the past week.
More than 100 House Democrats met behind closed doors Wednesday afternoon with representatives of the FBI and the U.S. Capitol Police. The lawmakers voiced what one senior aide who was present described as "serious concern" about their security in Washington and in their home districts when they return this weekend for the spring recess.
Usually only the congressional leadership has regular personal protection from the Capitol Police. But at least 10 lawmakers have been offered increased protection by law enforcement agencies, said House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.).
Asked whether members are endangered, Hoyer said: "Yes. [There are] very serious incidents that have occurred."
Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Terrance Gainer e-mailed senators and staffers Wednesday telling them to "remain vigilant." Gainer, a former Capitol Police chief, said in an interview that the warning was meant to "assuage people's fears."
But House Democrats say they are unnerved.
"Our democracy is about participation," Hoyer said. "Our democracy is about differing and debate and animated debate and passionate debate. But it is not about violence."

Oh, that's rich!
All this is being ginned up by Democrats to try and turn the tide of anger against them by marginalizing opposition. Show us the proof! Of course the propaganda arm of the tyrannical Democratic Party, the MSM, are again ever eager to assist.
Maybe imposition of tyranny has consequences Steny?
The GOP has to be aware that the batsh’t crazies of throwing money at handicapped, bricking windows and targeting families do not become the image of the GOP in coming elections.
The mainstream media has jumped on this fake issue. I think part of the reason is to get their takeover of student loans through without so much grief.
Wait until the kids have to depend on Uncle Sam for their college funds. And does the IRS collect, that should be fun.
Does obamacare cover fainting couches and smelling salts?
The democrats are trying to incite violence for the same reason Hugo Chavez rails on about the USA. If they don’t have an enemy, the people will turn on their leaders. In this case the democrats.
Personally I’m all for nurturing the anger of the left at their leaders.
Remind the liberals that Obama talked a big game about bringing down the big evil insurance companies but actually made them government contractors and handed them millions of new forced customers.
This their way of creating a crisis.
Remember the hanging effigy of Sarah Palin fron the election. How come that was okay?
These cocooned Beltway pansies are “unnerved” by anything remotely resembling reality entering their precious world.
Hoyer said. Our democracy is about differing and debate and animated debate and passionate debate. But it is not about violence.
Come on Hoyer! The left is ALL about violence! It's what you do best!
The result of taxation without representation?
Well they had to force the vote before they went home because they wanted to make sure their constituents had no input. So that input may be a little more intense now. Don’t let us speak prior, expect us to SCREAM after. Scream we will.
We participate by voting. Here is hoping that Hoyer gets hopped out of his honorable office.
just a thought here: democrat leaders makeup all these stories and accusations pointing fingers at good law abiding conservatives...they continue to fuel the fires of fear etc which shortly before the nov elections causes the federal gov’t to declare martial law. then the current regime stays in power. could it happen or be the plan?....
Just shut up and swallow the poison.
That’s what they expect from us.
And that’s the same way the colonists felt.
Has a single incident been confirmed? Or are we taking the word of the people who hang nooses on their own offices to show us that America is racist?
I call BS. They are trying to wear the victim cape. And even if they play an answering machine message, how do we know it’s not their employee, or cousin, or whatever? They would do it in a minute.
” The lawmakers voiced what one senior aide who was present described as “serious concern” about their security in Washington and in their home districts when they return this weekend for the spring recess.”
And I have a serious concern over what they have done to my and my children’s futures.
Yep, and those pansies have no idea what they have unleashed. November 2, 2010 is going to be brutal for those anti-American fascist.
I remember those incidents. They were under-reported by the MSM.
And remember the election day 2004 tire slashings of vans rented by Republicans in the get out the vote drive. A good Democrat son of a good Democrat congresswoman from Milwaukee was convicted in that crime.
And remember when arsonists burned Sarah Palin’s church to the ground?
Next up will be stories about threats to the president himself. The MSM will not report the fact that every president gets threats. Bush got them, and Obama gets them. Clinton got them. All such threats should be taken seriously and investigated, of course.
This is another indication of lack of context with the MSM reporting a story.
And weren’t we all moved by the sight of Nancy Pelosi and the other congressmen, walking arm in arm through an angry crowd to get to the Capitol the other day? Didn’t it just make you think that Nancy was just like the civil rights marchers of the ‘50s and ‘60s?????? (sarcasm)
” And does the IRS collect, that should be fun”
No, the taxpayers will again be left holding the bills while the “freeloaders” are given amnesty.
Exactly, with the media cooperating fully. Laughable.
They didn't have a problem when Bush and Cheney were hung in effigy. Nope, that was just fine.
No problem when General "Betray Us" was villified. That was ok too.
