UT-Sen: Could Robert Bennett Be the First Victim of Anti-Individual Mandate Anger?

By: Jon Walker Wednesday March 24, 2010 6:25 pm

Sen. Robert Bennett (R-UT) is in a serious fight for his political survival. His is currently getting challenged from the right by several Republican candidates who think he is too liberal to be the Republican nominee for Senate. The recent enactment of the health insurance reform law and the anti-individual mandate effort it stirred up could turn out to be a real liability for Bennett.

Prominent conservatives, like Erick Erickson, have realized that Bennett was for the individual mandate before he was against it. Bennett helped write the Wyden-Bennett health care reform proposal, which was built on the core idea of forcing everyone to buy health insurance. Since Democrats decided to include it in their health care plan, this idea has become very unpopular with the Republican base and elected officials. Powerful groups on the righ,t like the Club for Growth, have been using Bennett’s support of the individual mandate in attacks against him.

Utah uses a multi-stage caucus process to choose nominees, potentially giving a relatively small number of highly-driven activists the ability to have a large impact. Last night was the first step in the process where local caucuses choose delegates to attend the party convention on May 8th.

The Republican caucus last night saw very high turnout and we should know the result of this afternoon. If Bennett fails to win the nomination over the course of the caucusing process, he may ironically be the first victim of the anti-individual mandate push from the right.

Time for fossil incumbents to be retired since they didn’t have the grace to retire on their own.

We must pray they don’t become spiteful and vote for immigration reform or other odious legislation.

Bennet is an amnesty supporter as well. He deserves to be defeated as does McCain.

Get rid of the stinking RINOs especially McCain.

The GOP needs to fight to DEFUND and then DE-stroy ObamaCare.

Voting “no” on healthcare should not be enough to save ANY RINO. Where do you stand on amnesty? On Cap and Tax? On Glow Bull Warming? Have you ever uttered the words, “Reaching across the aisle my friends?” God! I hate that phrase!

I used to live in Utah. When Bennett supported amnesty I called his office and told them I would never vote for him and would campaign against him actively in the primary. I called Hatch’s office and told the girl there that I appreciated his vote because illegal immigrants were (at the time) becoming a real big problem in Utah. It isn’t as bad anymore since they are self-deporting. However, I told her that I was upset with Bennett and I was going to be campaigning against him. That is, if he’s still around in the next election. Because he’s so old. The girl laughed and agreed with me. Hatch is kind of cool

Those damn people think they own their seats. It’s just unreal.

Retire! The US Senate is filled with gray heads.

Heck! They think we "owe" them our votes and they have come to expect it.
I'm surprised that some idiot in congress hasn't introduced a bill saying that all congressional seats must be passed from father to son.
(I mean, that stupid old fashioned idea of voting for candidates really gets in the way of their progress, doncha know)

Patrick Kennedy most certainly thought the MA seat belonged to his daddy. It was as though he believed it should have been included in his Will.

You're not off base with your keen thinking masqueraded in humor.

LOL! I wasn’t trying to be humorous, my dear. I really do think some would like it if they could get away with it.

Between John Dingell and his Dad, a Dingell has held that congressional seat in Michighan for 75 years....
