Santorum: Healthcare Reconciliation DOA in Senate
Newsmax ^ | 3/21/10 | David A. Patten

Former GOP Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania said Sunday that the House reconciliation bill designed to fix shortcomings in the Senate’s healthcare reform legislation cannot legally be considered by the Senate, because it would impact Social Security revenues and therefore is not eligible for the reconciliation procedure.

Santorum also says Democratic leaders were well aware of this fact, but effectively “sandbagged” their members in the House in order to push healthcare reform through Congress.

Reconciliation is designed to pass healthcare reform without bringing it back before the Senate for approval. Sen. Scott Brown’s election in Massachusetts means Democrats no longer have the 60-vote majority they need to overcome a GOP filibuster, but they are believed to have the simple majority – 51 votes – needed to pass changes in the Senate via reconciliation.

To get the 216 votes they needed in the House, Democrats promised that aspects of the Senate bill representatives found unpalatable, including the Cornhusker Kickback and other notorious deals, would be “fixed” in the Senate via reconciliation. But Santorum says the House fixes aren’t eligible for the reconciliation procedure.

“Here’s the problem,” Santorum told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren on Sunday evening, “according to the 1974 budget act, if the provisions in the bill affect Social Security revenues, it’s invalid for reconciliation.”

Join the club! You know, the British have an interesting little holiday, Guy Fawkes Night, at which they burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes, who led a failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in order to kill the King and members of parliament - that is, to effectively destroy the country.

Seems to me we should be reviving that tradition, and burning the Bee-itch Pelosi in effigy.

No way! The House Deems were in on this all the way. They can go around crying “I tried so hard,” all the while this was the gameplan for weeks.

Did you see the Stupak video? He said a week ago he was going to vote for Obamacare.

Is he really that stupid to believe that there is any way to stop this? No wonder he lost his reelection campaign. What a bambi. Give me a break, we’re in the early stages of a dictatorship. BO and the rest of them couldn’t care less about votes, etc.

They will pass some sort of reconciliation bill. Probably one that eliminates the Cornhusker Kickback and the Louisiana Purchase, at a minimum. Even the Dems don’t like those parts (except two of them). If they don’t pass some sort of reconciliation bill, then the Dems will have to go into the election wearing stinky underpants. They won’t let that happen. And they may even get some Republicans to vote for reconciliation, once the socialized medicine part passes in the Senate Bill.

**Even if the reconciliation bill doesn’t pass, the Senate bill will become law when the Dems pass it, and we’ll have socialized medicine.**

Come on Y'all! We still have a lot of court action! We still have the 10th Amendment. AND we still have LOTS of ammo!

Donks can't shoot for sh*t!

Keep the faith!!!

Don't give them this "fix shortcomings" language. That makes it sound desirable, like it will moderate the worst parts of the bill. This bill is to appease the commies that didnt think that bad Senate bill went far enough!

But with a little luck, Stupy Stupak and band of faux Pro-lifers might feel like they were sold a bill of goods and go for the motion to recommit. . . would be sweet but I am not holding my breath.

The Republicans would be wise to stay away from any related bill, offering any kind of “fix.” Even if one Repub votes for cloture to allow Dems to “reconcile” the HC bill, Obama and the Democratic Party will call the healthcare bill “bi-partisan.”

Knock it off on blaming the Republicans who stayed home. (Actually, they didn’t. They just weren’t motivated to help McCain and his ilk who sold out on the promises of the Reagan and Gingrich revolutions.)

The present troubles are the fault of the Republican elites who continued to give us fellow elitists as candidates like McCain and Graham.

Our choices were democrat and democrat lite. The next battle is amnesty, and who is the one leading that sellout - Lindsey Graham.

Stop blaming real conservatives for the hell that liberals and liberal approval seekers like McCain and Graham caused.

I will blame them....Because they were on fire saying they were going to teach them a BIG lesson....You didn’t have to like McCain.....I certainly don’t. But life is full of tough choices...and in the choice between a full on Marxist and a mislead Republican..even a RINO like McLame....You Don’t ever let the Marxist anywhere NEAR The WHITE HOUSE!

Guy Fawkes did NOT lead a raid on Parliament or anything else, so recent historians claim. But the Brits aren’t buying the truth.

agreed. It was the choice between the two lesser evils.

In a perfect world, we would have had a solid conservative to take on Obama, but we didn’t. Still not worth throwing a vote away on a third party or not voting at all.
