My mother in law claims she cannot afford the $900/month bill for someone with her health condition(chain smoking diabetic). She supported Zero, and she supported this bill.

I know they can afford insurance. Like many, they just choose to spend money on frivolous outlays. My mother-in-law told my wife that she thinks it is a selfish reason that she supports the bill, but she wants to support it nonetheless.

I told my wife that her mother sold our future, our children’s future, and any grandchildren’s future down the river, all for the sum total of $900/month.

I am torn on what my response should be. How does one treat a family member that uses the power of government to steal from their daughter and son-in-law’s back pocket?

You can do what I have done: end interaction beyond brief ersatz pleasantries during holidays/weddings/funerals. When someone is willing to subject you to involuntary servitude, taxation without representation, violation of equal protection (or what have you), they ought not expect business as usual. Blood may be thicker than water, but it is not thicker than freedom.

I would be very cool bordering on cold towards her. I am at that same point with my in-laws. I’m polite, but little else towards them and they know why. I have told my children what their grandparents have done to them, by voting for Zero, and supporting this bill.

Let grandma and grandpa explain themselves to my kids.

Pray for her. She needs to learn to rely on Christ's love not the government.

You should tell your mother-in-law that she’s a thief and that she HAS sold our future. She is no better than the illegal immigrant or welfare queen who comes here demanding services.

Just let it go. Politics is politics, but family is family. Lord knows I have political disagreements with some family members, but life honestly is bigger than that.

Don't be too hard on your family member. Fight the socialists, but don't let it break up your family. This is the Achilles heal of democracy-the people elect those who give them more and more benefits.

We must fight them and win. Let's start by going after the sleeze bags in congress. I am so tired after hearing of a bribe, a job, etc. someone saying "that is the way congress works". It is corrupt!

With love because it is nothing personal.

I’m totally against the bill but $900 a month for a single insured, smoker or not, is crazy. Health care is out of control and so are the doctors and hospitals who over charge just so the insurance company will pay them a small ‘negotiated’ rate. It is a vicious circle. The system has a lot of broken parts that need to be addressed..just not this way.

Hold your feelings and treat her the way that you would want your parent treated by your spouse.

Your Mother In Law has no idea what the Legislation says or does, just like anyone who supports ObamaCare.

Benefits, if there really are any, will not kick in for four years and will not be fully implemented for eight years.

Taxes to pay for this fiasco will kick in next year and will just be used as an offset to the Deficit. When the program costs finally kick in, the Deficit will balloon to twice what it is today and the Health Care System will be paralyzed.

Oh yeah, just one other thing. The entire Legislation is UNCONSTITUTIONAL and it is destined to fail. Stupid is as stupid does, and they did it today.

Avoid liberals as much as humanly possible, for starters.

And take comfort that she's got four years before a single benefit will kick in, if ever. She's not stealing yet--she's rec'ing nothing for how she voted. And this bill will force her to buy insurance that she doesn't want to buy.

Try the truth: you have sold your children's future for a bowl of pottage.

You are stealing from them.

lets ask this a little differently.

If your mother in law was a supporting member of the Nazi or communist party but not an official in one of the parties how would you talk with her or how would you treat her?

My answer honestly. I would find out how loyal she is to the party because she could turn you in when that time comes and it will.

Shun and ignore them - divorce them in a sense. Act as if they don’t exist. Treat them like you would a doornail - dead to you and your family.

You do not want their “morals” infecting your children.

Use the smoking as a great excuse not to see them - your doing it “for the children”.

You have an obligation to be a dutiful son-in-law, but you don’t have to like her. Also, you can pray for her. After all, sometimes people do get a twinge of conscience or a change of heart, even years later.

I read a story out of England that the socialists refused health care to a carpenter who broke his leg on the job because he failed to stop smoking. His family was forced to set his leg as best they could on the kitchen table at his brother’s house.

You don’t have to do anything to the socialist in your family. She’ll suffer and pay big time for what she did to your generation. I would refuse to take up the slack (funds for care) for what Obama does not give to her as she ages. Explain that all your extra money was taken by the socialist government and you can not afford to help her. That is what happens in Europe. Kids let their parents wallow in absolute filth in nursing homes and hospitals because they don’t have the money to do anything privately for them.

I would remind her that nothing contained in the bill will lower her premium. However, also remind her that she will now be forced to purchase insurance or face a fine and/or jail.

This is the one thing about this that bothers me so much, the media did a horrible job explaining that this does NOT reduce premiums.
