Just an example of the limitations on speech in the USA.
Now,there are few people who both look more "middle America" and with a more "middle America" profile than me.And I've crossed more international borders in my life than I can remember (dozens and dozens of times) with only one problem (a South African Immigration officer to whom I mouthed off after he mouthed off to me...I was admitted after a few minutes).
The Canadian border station in question was dead at the time...me and a guy with Alaska plates.Maybe they were bored...or had to keep their "numbers" up (thus justifying their continued existence/staffing)..or were using me as a training exercise.I don't know.
It left a very,*very* bad taste in my mouth regarding Canada.
And BTW...I was admitted after the grilling/search and I was admitted again a few days later at another crossing.
Okay. You win. Bye.
You mean you can't use the "f"-word?
FWIW, I've had the same experience as a US citizen coming back to the US. The crossing at Houlton, ME has become a true example of ICE excess.
Messenger: “Choose your next words carefully, Leonidas. They may be your last as king.”
This...is...Ottowa!
“For example, promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges.”
I HATE Canadian commies (even the unidentifiable ones) and I urge the rest of Earth’s inhabitants to feel the same way I do. F*** Canadians!
How’s that, Francois, you leftist turd extraordinaire?!
That seems “meaningful, reasoned and intelligent” to me. When I run into hairless little betas like you this is about all I can muster. It’s this, or I help you take your rightful place under my right foot.
Part of the point I was trying to make is that they seemed to have a political agenda.Apart from the South African immigration officer I mentioned (whom I "met" during apartheid...seemed like a real "redneck") this is the only time I've ever felt a foreign immigration/customs officer had such an agenda.Particularly given who and what I am I'm stunned...and put off...by that treatment.
Hopefully,Ann Coulter won't experience even worse hostility from Canadian officials....as Mark Steyn apparently did.
Yes, we keep it in a dusty book under glass in a library. We take it out and look at it occasionally. We don't practice it anymore though.
"...as well as on our campus?" As if the campus were not really a part of Canada?
Ann rocks!
Hopefully, the cellphone cams will be out in full force.
Having skimmed through the article and the responses, and as a Western Canadian, I have to point out a preeminently relevant observation about Eastern (Upper Canada) and simpering liberals such as the Provost.
As suggested by a senior emeritus economist from Academe in the West, Eastern Canadians have a rather unpleasant reputation of being “increasingly infected with the qualities that since the Trudeau era have come to define Canadian “national” character — sanctimonious, resentful, whining, spiteful, hypocritical, preening, cowardly, feckless, weak”..
Regretfully this description has not improved since it was first written in 2005.
The Provost should be cautioned that Anne is likely to obliterate the sanctimonious nonentity.
Hatred has nothing to do with speech in Canada. Opening your mouth in Canada equals hatred if an identifiable group even complains regardless of evidence.
Regrettably all too true. Plus the tactic of the Human Rights Commission often dragging out the proceedings and then dropping the case. Just in case the magistrate happens to be old fashioned and throws them out of court. In the meantime the innocent victim has gone through a very trying time. One noted figure, Ezra Levant, although besting the tribunal has now $100,000 in lawyers fees. Their fees? Zilch.
Mark Steyn was appraised of a sudden withdrawal of the case against him two years ago, by the HRC. The Council of Muslim Canadians (or similiar title) then went after Macleans Magazine for publishing Mark Steyn. It was thrown out. Mark seemed to think the Islamic purpose is to put Western countries under their yoke.
He has a point there.
Well , the man must have a name . Or did you make that up?

Well, Gosh Darn , all I've ever heard about Western Canadians is that they make sheep nervous. Very nervous.
Since I haven't read the entire thread I am sure someone has already said this but, nevertheless, have you forgotten who the Commander and Chief is? Do you think he would rescue one of his severest critics?
Let me know if you'd like to be added to the Ann Coulter ping list.
Ann is speaking in Ottawa tomorrow on Tuesday.
Today, Monday, she will be speaking at the University of Western Ontario
They better hope the United States doesn't roll over one night and crush them.LOL!They are lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent.
(one of my faqvorite AC quotes)
THAT's a good one!See also, the quote in THIS photograph!
Here's a quote from a Canadian paper from Sat about her speech on Tuesday nite
The president of the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa has barred a volunteer organizer from putting up posters advertising the upcoming appearance of American right-wing columnist and political commentator Ann Coulter.
[Now here comes the irony] She is to talk about political correctness, media bias and freedom of speech Tuesday night at Marion Hall as part of a Canadian lecture tour. Canadian conservative political activist Ezra Levant will also speak at the event and introduce Coulter.
"The federation does not support Ann Coulter speaking on our campus," said student president Seamus Wolfe. "We're trying to work with the administration to see if we can ask her to do her speaking event somewhere else."
He said the federation controls which posters can be placed inside the University Centre building, while administration officials approve posters at other university buildings. A university spokesperson said the administration did not object to the poster.
Wolfe said the executive of the federation is in agreement that they don't want to see Coulter speaking on campus.
"There is an interesting line between what is free speech and what is hate speech," he said. "As difficult as it is to navigate that boundary, Ann Coulter has a history of hate speech and we wouldn't invite somebody who spreads hate to come to our campus."
Nicholas Fleet, a U of O economics student, said it's an "affront" that the student federation has prevented him from putting up posters at the University Centre.
"People like Ann Coulter will come and go, but freedoms such as expression need to be tested and should be respected by student unions," said Fleet, adding that he's agreed not to distribute the posters.
But he noted that the posters for Coulter's appearance were printed by Campus Print, the university printing department that is operated by the student federation.
"They took our money for printing the posters, but in the end they said we couldn't put up the posters," said Fleet.
Coulter's visit is sponsored by the International Free Press Society-Canada and the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute.
Coulter could not be reached for comment.
