Provost of the U of Ottawa is Threatening to Criminally Prosecute Ann Coulter!
University of Ottawa ^ | March 21, 2010 | François Houle

Posted on 03/21/2010 2:31:23 PM PDT by Syncro

Dear Ms. Coulter,

I understand that you have been invited by University of Ottawa Campus Conservatives to speak at the University of Ottawa this coming Tuesday.  We are, of course, always delighted to welcome speakers on our campus and hope that they will contribute positively to the meaningful exchange of ideas that is the hallmark of a great university campus.

We have a great respect for freedom of expression in Canada, as well as on our campus, and view it as a fundamental freedom, as recognized by our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  I would, however, like to inform you, or perhaps remind you, that our domestic laws, both provincial and federal, delineate freedom of expression (or “free speech”) in a manner that is somewhat different than the approach taken in the United States.

I therefore encourage you to educate yourself, if need be, as to what is acceptable in Canada and to do so before your planned visit here.  You will realize that Canadian law puts reasonable limits on the freedom of expression.

For example, promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges.  Outside of the criminal realm, Canadian defamation laws also limit freedom of expression and may differ somewhat from those to which you are accustomed.

I therefore ask you, while you are a guest on our campus, to weigh your words with respect and civility in mind.  There is a strong tradition in Canada, including at this University, of restraint, respect and consideration in expressing even provocative and controversial opinions and urge you to respect that Canadian tradition while on our campus.

Hopefully, you will understand and agree that what may, at first glance, seem like unnecessary restrictions to freedom of expression do, in fact, lead not only to a more civilized discussion, but to a more meaningful, reasoned and intelligent one as well.

I hope you will enjoy your stay in our beautiful country, city and campus.

Sincerely,

François Houle

Messenger: “Choose your next words carefully, Leonidas.

They may be your last as king.”

Excellent!

May History repeat itself...

...and the threatening words of this current "messenger" from Ottowa also be turned back against himself...
...just as they were against the PREVIOUS messenger from a corrupt, would-be tyrant:

You got that right!

And here is a little something from the Strictly Right website--the blog of the radio station that interviewed her in Canada:

Contact the Ottawa University Czars

The Ottawa University Federation of Students passed a motion today to attempt to ban Ann Coulter from speaking on their campus.

The wording of the motion was priceless:

Whereas Ann Coulter is a hateful woman;
Whereas she has made hateful comments against GLBTQ, Islam, Judaism, and women;
Be it resolved that the [Student Federation of the University of Ottawa] express its disapproval of having Ann Coulter speak at the University of Ottawa

KJ360 posted the results of the vote. I encourage ALL readers to express their contempt for a board of students who believes in censoring a woman they disagree with (after already approving the event in the first place.) For your convenience, here are the email addresses of the individuals who voted to ban Ann from speaking:

Being the benevolent person that I am, I’ve even prepared their email addresses in list form for you to conveniently copy and paste into your email program to send them all a piece of your mind:

president@sfuo.ca; vp.finance@sfuo.ca; vp.university@sfuo.ca; vp.social@sfuo.ca; segjulie@gmail.com; jsegu021@uOttawa.ca; lrash035@uOttawa.ca; jrae072@uOttawa.ca; cgray087@uOttawa.ca; ibran072@uOttawa.ca; sking006@uOttawa.ca

Might get some action

I like this from the KJ350 link above:

Ann Coulter Motion
Michele declares she is disgusted by the apparent stall tactics.

I do not have a copy of this motion because it’s emergency.

Again, my position on this is very clear.

QP:

Guillaume questions (some challenge that is debate)

Debate:
Jim Rae is for this motion.
Julie is for this motion.
Scott. prefaces that he thinks Coulter is hateful, but he is willing to listen because he believes that we need to give people the right to speak. He will go, and not agree with anything she has to say.

LOL, I like that last sentence. I hope she tells him he is handsome and intelligent!

Mark seemed to think the Islamic purpose is to put Western countries under their yoke.

He has a point there.

Not only does he have a point, he is exactly right.

That is the Islamic goal, to put everyone in the world under their yoke.

Or kill them.

Period. Convert by the sword if necessary.

You gotta KNOW that Ann is right now deviously looking for...
...EXACTLY the right "hot button" to push...
...in her upcoming speech to those young Canadian skulls full of mush...
...to drive their uptight PC-fascist masters absolutely BONKERS! :o)

As I posted on the OTHER thread:
Since you may one day join Premier Danny Williams and other fellow Canadians by heading south to take advantage of our advanced medical care...
Bingo!

This could be a big winner!

Imagine Ann Coulter getting arrested for her "hate speech" against the socialist Canadian health care system!

It would be PERFECT timing...
...and would certainly help to frame the current lurch to the left in OUR health care laws.

An alternative "hot button" for Ann to mash...
...is to tweak their knee-jerk "Muslim terrorist-coddling" impulse. :o)

Mark Steyn commented on this:

PRE-CRIME ALERT![She's also asking for it]

with his usually witty titles and comments.

MARK STEYN on the Canadian threat letter to Ann Coulter:
...What a sad and embarrassing letter, even by the standards of the Canadian academy. Does M Houle write to all University of Ottawa speakers like this?

Or does he reserve his telekinetic powers to detect "pre-crime" only for the ideologically suspect?

I've no idea what Ann Coulter's reaction to this letter is, but I suspect it's "Go ahead, Princess Fairy Pants, make my day."

M Houle would have a very hard time persuading the Ottawa police or the RCMP to lay criminal charges over an Ann Coulter speech because they realize, even if he doesn't, that Canada doesn't need to become even more of an international laughingstock in this area. More likely is a complaint to the Canadian and/or Ontario "Human Rights" Commissions.

But you know something? I don't get the feeling they'd be eager to re-ignite the free speech wars on a nuclear scale. Think of Ezra's and my appearance in the House of Commons, and then imagine the scene when Miss Coulter testifies. So the threat is an empty one and M Houle seems to be being - oh, what's the "respectful and civil" way of putting it? - a posturing wanker.

This is the pitiful state one of the oldest free societies on the planet has been reduced to, and this is why our free speech campaign matters - because those who preside over what should be arenas of honest debate and open inquiry instead wish to imprison public discourse within ever narrower bounds - and in this case aren't above threatening legal action against those who dissent from the orthodoxies.

Lots of Americans loathe Ann Coulter but it takes a Canadian like François Houle to criminalize her. The strictures he attempts to place around her, despite his appeal to "Canadian law", are at odds with the eight centuries of Canada's legal inheritance. Canadians should point that out to him politely, and explain that, although he lives high off the hog courtesy of the Canadian taxpayer, he does not speak for them.

Fax : (613) 562-5106
e-mail: francois.houle@uottawa.ca

As I say, be polite but withering. He has after all explicitly threatened a visitor to Canada from a friendly country in a manner more suited to banana republic police chiefs.

And, if he insists his threats are not mere masturbatory posturing, tell him to contact Chief Commissar Jennifer Lynch, QC direct, and advise her that I'll be covering the hearing.

Actually, I don’t see anything sinister with this letter.

Then you should change your nic. Who else gets this type of letter? YOu don't think this is a direct and personal threat?

“Actually, I don’t see anything sinister with this letter. It is just a mention of differences between Canadian and U.S. freedom of expression laws.”

If this letter was sent to every foreign visitor/speaker, you would have a point.

But it is not.

It was sent specifically to Ann and for the express purpose to stifle her speech.

I suppose the CINC could bow and speak in vague, nondescript, wishy-washy terms, but the Commandant would provide much color, technical detail and focus.

Thanks for the pings, Folks.

This is just stupid and embarrassing crap from the left as usual.

After what Mark Steyn, and Ezra Levant have put Jennifer Lynch through this year, I don't think she'd have much interest in getting in to battle of brains with Ann. Lynch would be showing up unarmed.

Welcome to Canada anyway, Ann.

If this letter was sent to every foreign visitor/speaker, you would have a point.

And you know that with certainty? The correspondence would be addressed to her directly since that is the professional thing to do, and not just hand her a memo. But that doesn't preclude a similar letter going out to other individuals who might be speaking.

Even if there was some sinister plot, Ann chose to accept the speaking position. She can certainly make up her own mind and fight her own battles in a foreign country.

I still think there are much bigger fish to fry within the U.S. than worrying about some university outside of our own borders.
