Per MSNBC, Bart Stupak has agreed to language in an executive order that would satisfy his block. He had called a press conference at 12:30, but has now canceled it. The seven Democrats left in his block will vote yes.
Details of what the order will contain are not known. Yesterday the Washington Post said that it is likely at the very least to restate Obamas commitment to upholding the Hyde Amendment.
Right now, the Hyde Amendment has to be renewed each year in the Appropriations bill. Having a Democratic President state it in the form of an Executive Order would be quite a coup for anti-abortion activists.
But Stupak has been after more than just Hyde. The health care bill contains $10 billion for Bernie Sanders community clinics, which would begin immediately rather than waiting until 2014. Planned Parenthood had pledged their support for the bill with the knowledge that much of that money would be going to their clinics, but would not be used for abortion services. However Stupak has pursuing the agenda of Americans United for Life, who want a commitment that no money go toward Planned Parenthood clinics regardless of what it is used for.
Its possible that the Stupak block were just looking for a graceful way out, an excuse to drop their fight and vote for the bill without looking to the anti-abortion community that they just gave in to political pressure. But until the language of the executive order is released publicly, nobody will know.
Rep. Diana DeGette agreed to support the executive order yesterday on behalf of the pro-choice caucus. DeGette has still not released the 41 names of those who signed her letter saying they would not vote for a conference report that contains language that restricts womens right to choose any further than current law, even though the language in the Senate bill most certainly does that.
Imagine what today would look like if progressives in the House had held their ground like the unions or the anti-abortion Democrats. As Armando notes, It actually stands as a testament to the ineptitude of progressives. Fighting for a very popular initiative, they still could not muster a bargaining strategy that could work.
Join us at 2pm today when debate iof the bill will begin in the House. It will proceed for 2 hours and then be stopped for the vote. After the House votes on the Senate bill, there will immediately be a vote on the reconciliation fix. Well be live blogging.
Stupak Caved is the mantra that should be sold in November..
Tomorrow morning.
Stupak - killin babies on Sunday.
Pro-Life Democrats - what a joke.
The list, ping
You're right. It can't. It's not legal.
Sorry I was wrong.
How can you have an executive order on a bill that hasn’t even been voted in yet? This is insane. I can’t stand it anymore!
Do you know if the states are going to wait for the feds to file after them, or are they going to file first and when?
Envisioning the mother of all tax revolts coming in the very near future...
Yeah, the Virginia AG said they would be filing suit immediately after Obama signs this.
Again to keep people’s spirits up, this is our generation’s version of Pearl Harbor. Happening on a Sunday morning to boot.
These people were never going to give up until they took over industry and everyone’s lives. We could either have them keep eating away at us bit by bit until dead. Or we could have them get greedy like they are doing now.
Rest up folks. The Island hopping campaign begins tomorrow. And we aren’t alone as there are 150-200 million plus Americans ready to join the battle.
Do Stupak and friends realize that even if Obama is true to his word, nothing stops a future president from rescinding the executive order?
I feared this would happen. Party trumps all, apparently.
Boy howdy, I can only imagine the promises 0bama and Pelosi have made behind closed doors. There is going to be favors granted and largess doled out on a scale not seen since...well, I don’t know when.
Yeah I agree. This is war and we have to be organized with a strategy and tactics to carry this on a host of issues.
Earlier generations of American patriots faced worse, and persevered.
Here is how it plays out. If passed, this massive, partisan piece of socialist dreck will never be directly repealed by our corrupt and craven Congress. There are two substantive possibilities to reverse it however. One is defiance: civil disobedience, voluntary non-production, capital withdrawal, and "underground" economics. I suggest you begin to plan your personal strategies now.
The other very real possibility is the use of our judiciary via lawsuit to promote a finding that our Federal government does not have any authority under the Constitution to mandate the purchase of a service nor to impose penalties upon those who refuse to comply.
I believe as a matter of both case law and Constitutional interpretation that Congress is exceeding its authority under Article 1 Section 8 of our greatest founding document, and that if properly challenged, sections of the new law will be held invalid.
I repeat: now is not the time to wave a white flag. If you truly care about Liberty and the future of your country, it is time to retrench, strategize, and reload.
Finally, the socialists' response to our efforts will reveal their true nature, and quite possibly contain the seeds of our eventual victory. Just be prepared to know your rights and do what you must when they mount their attacks.
Hate to be a pollyanna about this, but the “per MSNBC” leaves some doubt. Haven’t heard anyting on Fox yet . . .
A block of cheese has more creditability than this group!
Schmuck whore Stupak. An exec order can be reversed by POTUS at any time. ObamaCareAbortions are forever.
It can’t and the USCCB warned as much. Pro-death extremists will sue, the EO will be toast.
