Per MSNBC, Bart Stupak has agreed to language in an executive order that would satisfy his block. He had called a press conference at 12:30, but has now canceled it. The seven Democrats left in his block will vote yes.
Details of what the order will contain are not known. Yesterday the Washington Post said that it is likely at the very least to restate Obamas commitment to upholding the Hyde Amendment.
Right now, the Hyde Amendment has to be renewed each year in the Appropriations bill. Having a Democratic President state it in the form of an Executive Order would be quite a coup for anti-abortion activists.
But Stupak has been after more than just Hyde. The health care bill contains $10 billion for Bernie Sanders community clinics, which would begin immediately rather than waiting until 2014. Planned Parenthood had pledged their support for the bill with the knowledge that much of that money would be going to their clinics, but would not be used for abortion services. However Stupak has pursuing the agenda of Americans United for Life, who want a commitment that no money go toward Planned Parenthood clinics regardless of what it is used for.
Its possible that the Stupak block were just looking for a graceful way out, an excuse to drop their fight and vote for the bill without looking to the anti-abortion community that they just gave in to political pressure. But until the language of the executive order is released publicly, nobody will know.
Rep. Diana DeGette agreed to support the executive order yesterday on behalf of the pro-choice caucus. DeGette has still not released the 41 names of those who signed her letter saying they would not vote for a conference report that contains language that restricts womens right to choose any further than current law, even though the language in the Senate bill most certainly does that.
Imagine what today would look like if progressives in the House had held their ground like the unions or the anti-abortion Democrats. As Armando notes, It actually stands as a testament to the ineptitude of progressives. Fighting for a very popular initiative, they still could not muster a bargaining strategy that could work.
Join us at 2pm today when debate iof the bill will begin in the House. It will proceed for 2 hours and then be stopped for the vote. After the House votes on the Senate bill, there will immediately be a vote on the reconciliation fix. Well be live blogging.
I’m going to stand up and fight, it’s just really hard hearing all this. I have been faxing, calling, you name it, I’ve done it. My cell phone bill these last two months has been insane because I have gone over my minutes calling these people in Washington telling them to vote NO, so I have done my part. It’s just really depressing to know that all of this fighting we are doing and they are going to vote for it anyway
No, it's not. This is SOP for the democrat party, and Washington, D.C. in general. There are very few legislators on either side of the aisle with a moral compass.
Honduras had not only pure Supremes, they had a fortunate Constitutional clause that called for the ouster of leaders caught in monkey business to attempt to keep themselves in power beyond legal limits, AND the court not the legislature was in charge of determining that. The corresponding American move would be an impeachment in Congress and we know that’s a toothless tiger if not also an unwilling Rat one.
Anyone who believes Obama is a man of his word is a complete moron. I hope Stupak and crew are not morons.
Nothing of this scope has been attempted, outside of wartime as a consequence of the war effort. We are in a quasi-war on terrorists now, but Bummer has notably made no reference to that in pimping Bummercare. This IS new.
Then what's the point of watching the news and posting to Free Republic?
If you honestly believe that it's "too late", then show some dignity and go quietly into the long dark night alone.
Leave those who still have the will to fight to do what they must.
Hey newbie, are you for real or is this some sort of joke?
Ultimately (SCOTUS will have its say on such) it can't but don't confuse logic with Democrat actions.
This move is to give cover to the wavering Demos. Then they can go back home and say: "I was promised they would fix the abortion law and I was lied to. Send me back to Congress so I can fix it right this time!"
I”m going to stand up and fight, it’s just really hard hearing all this. I have been faxing, calling, you name it ive done it. My cell phone bill these last two months has been insane because I have gone over my minutes calling these people in Washington telling them to vote NO, so I have done my part. ++++++
Those that will NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR KILLING BABIES INSIDE THIER MOTHER’S WOMB, THE LINE HAS NOW BEEN DRAWN.
May be new, but it ain't the end of the democrat party, which is what I wrote. This IS the democrat party these days -- the progressives are clearly in charge, and it is not limited to the democrat party. Lindsay Graham, John McCain and their ilk are are leading the GOP down the same path. It is the progressives that we need to target and bring down.
Before this is all over, you may look back on this time as "the good old days". There's no telling how far we as a people will have to go to win back our country. It could get uglier than most of us are willing to contemplate today.
The real revolution is in our minds. If we give up in heart, we have effectively surrendered before the first shot has been fired, or the first boxcar of patriots has been shipped off to the gulag.
No one can make you surrender in spirit. Only you can do that.
So, what are you going to DO about it? Sit here on FR, moaning and sobbing about the "death of the republic" - demoralizing every honest patriot who will listen to your blubbering surrender?
Stand up and fight, or sit down and be quiet while better people do what's necessary to restore your freedom.
They hang up on me BUT someone alive answered the phone so may be you will be luckier. CALL THEM!
You also don't fight a dictator by openly surrendering in public, like you're doing.
Find your backbone, and straighten it. There's a long hard march ahead.
Let Stupak know! THIS IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL! The Executive branch can not legislate! Obama is not upholding the constitution and needs to be impeached!
CALL THE NUMBER I POSTED ABOVE, PLEASE.

Boehner: Pro-Life Democrats Cant Hide Behind an Executive Order

GOP Leader: Make no mistake, a yes vote on the Democrats health care bill is a vote for taxpayer-funded abortions.
WASHINGTON, DC House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement on a potential Executive Order from the White House on abortion:
The law of the land trumps any Executive Order, which can be reversed or altered at the stroke of a pen by this or any subsequent President without any congressional approval or notice. Moreover, while an Executive Order can direct members of the executive branch, it cannot direct the private sector.
Because of Roe v. Wade, courts have interpreted the decision as a statutory mandate that the government must provide federal funding for elective abortion in through federal programs. In other words, no Executive Order or regulation can override a statutory mandate unless Congress passes a law that prohibits federal funding from being used in this manner. Legal experts at the US Catholic Conference of Bishops, National Right to Life Committee, Americans United for Life, and Family Research Council have confirmed this view that if the Senate bill is signed into law, it is a statutory mandate for the new health plans to include federal funding of elective abortion. The need for an Executive Order is evidence that this is true, and Congressional Democrats know it. Make no mistake, a yes vote on the Democrats health care bill is a vote for taxpayer-funded abortions.
