John Lewis was quite a student organizer-protestor in the Civil Rights Movement.
He got beat up quite a few times.
A one time he actually worked with a younger Robert K. (B-1 Bob) Dornan on voter registration in the South.
But his militancy of speech could sometimes stir up controversy.
In August of 1963, Lewis was to speak before Martin Luther King at the Lincoln Memorial in the now famous event.
The day before the march, according to author Taylor Branch in his biographical epic on Martin Luther King (Parting The Waters: America In The King Years `1954-1963)Page 874:
"Trouble over the speech began on Tuesday afternoon, the day before the march. A Catholic prelate took the Lewis draft to Washington's Archbishop Patrick O'Boyle, who was scheduled to deliver the opening invocation at the march. O'Boye found Lewis' remarks incendiary, and his complaints soon spread to Burke Marshall, Walter Reuther (UAW President), and to other white clergymen who had agreed to participate......Lewis stoutly defended his speech against censorship by the elders, who argued in rejoinder that its content-particularly the statement that the civil rights bill (what would be the Civil Rights Act of 1964) came "too little, too late" and was unworthy of SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) support-was incompatible with the general purpose of the march.."
Some of the other controversial content that Lewis intended to speak that day included stuff like this according to Branch. (pages 873-874)
"We will march through the South, through the heart of Dixie, the way Sherman did. We shall pursue our own 'scorched earth' policy and burn Jim Crow to the ground--noviolently. We shall crack the South into a thousand pieces and put them back together in the image of democracy."
My father retired from the Atlanta Police Dept. Hosea was a very bad and usually quite drunk driver!
Hosea was known for his multiple DUI’s and accidents. He always had a few drinks and enjoyed his “hooch”-as he called it. A cop asked him once why he hit a fire hydrant and Hosea said it was placed in the wrong place for his car to get through. He also received a Silver Star, multple Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts from his heroics in WW II. I always admired the man, but wished he didn’t have a problem with the booze, knowing full well the demons he was chasing.
So you are aware of his antics. Oh what the hell, yeah, it was him.
I also respect his work in the Feed the Hungry Project. I had always considered going to their big day on Thanksgiving, but was (for obvious reasons) a little hesitant. It seemed that it was a good project though. No one is ALL bad.
Born n’ raised on the west side, ma’am. Yes, VERY familar. And don’t miss him one bit!
Fox News stinks. Their radio top of the hour stuff says the same thing in the same way that ABC does. I can’t believe people think they are so great.
Fox News should be ashamed of using innuendo alone as a source for such an inflammatory story. Geraldo doesn’t know any better, his career was made on innuendo, but Huckabee ran with it too last night. Now the morning crew along with Chris Wallace is doing it.
If this does not stop, and FOX continues to spout the Lewis lie. We will stop watching FOX, and most likely drop our satalitte feed.
I see no reason to pay for something I can get on all the rainbow stations, I won't watch them either. I will just get my news from FreeRepublic.
I don't mean that I don't understand why they're for welfare or for affirmative action. That I can understand. I don't mean that I don't understand why they don't vote for conservative white Republicans. That I can understand. What drives me up the flippin' wall is why the Black church is utterly incapable of producing a single, solitary politician who isn't a raving looney on homosexuality, on abortion, on euthanasia, on evolution, on Israel . . . on every subject under the sun.
Muammar Qaddafi is a Communist dictator, but he's a fundamentalist moslem as well. No abortion or "gay rights" in Libya, and our liberals (who act as if the dark ages ended on 1/22/1973) have never uttered one word of criticism of him for it. Shoot, so far as I know Hugo Chavez, though a Communist dictator, is a fundamentalist chr*stian who doesn't allow abortions or "gay rights" in Venezuela. Yet in America one cannot be economically left wing without being socially and morally left wing as well. Has no one in this day and time ever heard of William Jennings Bryan? Of Huey P. Long?
One of these days I simply must get up the courage to ask some local Black chr*stian acquaintance just what is the flippin' matter with them on these issues.
He’s a congressional version of al sharpton.
Exactly. They have some decent personalities, but their news is absolutely wretched. I get just as mad. The Fox newscasters regurgitate Democrat talking points, using the exact same descriptive terminology and psychological prompts as the unwatchable chatty Cathy’s on CNN Headline News.
Geraldo is as stupid as any MSNBC reporter.
I have black tenants and I say what ever I feel like saying to them. Nothing Racial mind you, but just about the system they DESIRE to continue to live in.
Like Keep you legs closed for a change. Where is the DAD's of these kids.
Like "Why do you want to continue to be in slavery?"
Of course there is never an legitimate answer, they just look at me, like Buckwheat just saw a ghost.
One said to me, cause I would not fix something she broke, "Im going to report you, for discrimination"
My reply, "Go for it", over half of my rentals are black, and you were BLACK when I rented to you a year ago, RIGHT?
SHUT HER THE HELL UP.
In my humble opinion, the absolute association of traditional morality with a certain specific economic system is part of what's killing us here.
A few years ago Lewis spoke at the Duke University graduation. He was the obligatory token black that elite Southern schools have to trot out now. Everyone gave him a standing ovation when he was introduced (except me). When he finally finished there was tepid applause. I think nobody could understand a thing he said...
They rely on your fear to approach them, that is how they win.
He exemplifies a belief among some some in the civil rights movement that “justice” won’t be achieved until we have reverse Jim Crow of even reverse slavery.
