After hearing out everyone everyone from President Obama to tea party activists, Dover Democratic Rep. Zack Space announced today that he'll oppose the health care reform bill that's up for a vote on Sunday in the House of Representatives.
Space, who represents a sprawling southeast Ohio congressional district with a high concentration of Republicans, said he doesn't like the bill, and his constituents don't like it, either.
"Probably the most significant concern is the pay-fors in the bill," said Space. "They are opening the door to taxing employee benefits as income, which is going to create, I dont care how you slice it, a hardship for middle class families that they cant afford to endure right now."
Space said the version of the bill he supported last year taxed the wealthiest Americans, rather than the middle class, to pay some of the working poor's health care costs.
"This bill has taken those people out of it," said Space.
Space has been targeted by Republicans since he won a seat previously held by scandal-tainted GOP Rep. Bob Ney. This afternoon the National Republican Congressional Committee sent out an email that asked whether Space would "slash Medicare benefits for Ohio seniors" by supporting the bill, and called the vote potentially "career-ending" for him.
Earlier this year, Space issued a statement that strongly disapproved of the Senate bill. He said he told a group of roughly 13,000 constituents who participated in a telephone town hall meeting with him on Friday night that he'd vote against the bill.
Space's announcement leaves Toledo Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur as the only uncommitted Ohio member of Congress on the controversial vote. She has concerns about the bill's handling of abortion, but has said she is leaning towards a "Yes." All Ohio Republicans oppose the bill, along with Cincinnati Democrat Steve Driehaus, who worries the bill won't do enough to keep tax dollars from funding abortions,
The rest of Ohio's Democrats back the bill.
Congressmen Dreier had a good line this morning about the real March Madness taking place this weekend is in Washington.
Yes there would be cover for them since the majority of Americans don’t want this bill passed!
Keep calling and faxing.
We need to support the Dems in the house that stand against this folks, I mean it. We probably disagree on most everything else but they are taking a stand against their party in favor of our most holy king Jesus our most cherished values for LIFE we can’t forget it. They are true patriots mor importantly they are moral human beings voting against their short term political interests.
The Bible says if two people on earth agree on anything it will be done for him by God. Do I have anyone that wants to agree with me that this bill needs to be stopped by divine intervention??? If so say your prayer! He hears them all!
Did you catch Alcee Hastings talk about how women might have to start giving abortions to themselves a while ago...(shaking head). These dems are so full of BS, their breath stinks....lol. One made up sob story after another.
That I can do. My Rep. is Cassidy - a doctor and a solid “No” and always has been - so no need to really contact him. The only nightmare is on the Senate side - Landrieu (whom I contacted by fax, email and calling for months and months and months). Unfortunately we can’t replace her this year, but her day’s coming!! She’ll have a hard time surviving this “Louisiana Purchase” thing, and didn’t slide to an easy victory last time.
Speak the language they understand. I’ve told a couple that I’ve gotten through to, that I rarely donate to political causes, but after they vote no, I will call back with a donation. Don’t know if it makes a difference or not, but I imagine it’s better than ranting and screaming.
I agree!
He’s a slick one, ole Alcee.
But Massa said there aren't any shower curtains (to protect them from Rahm) in the gym :-)
Unless they vow to vote for repeal, support them until they run for office then throw them out on the street. The only reason this and just about any of these “bull dogs democrats” votes no is not for anyone’s lives but their own. The dragon lady must have given them the go ahead.
They are trying to destroy our country, that is not a trait I desire in a public servant, particularly one that took an oath to protect us from all enemies, either from San Fran or Kenya.
They all need to go, the sooner the better.
Don't allow this deception to fool you if this gets through.
1. To exempt Tricare (military)
2. For the Senate Bill
3. House fixes to the Senate bill
I am concerned about your number one. Do you have a reliable source for that one? It is VERY important for all the military retired and disabled since the Senate bill is gutting TFL. Thanks for any additional information.
THANKS!!! WE DO NEED GOOD NEWS!
“The dragon lady must have given them the go ahead.”
My thoughts exactly. They’ll get the votes if they have to lie, beg, cheat, steal or kill (to borrow a line from S. O’Hara). It really would take divine intervention to stop it at this point. November can’t get here soon enough!
I stand in agreement with you!
Have mercy on us God, and thwart the plans of those that want this bill passed.
Amen
Yes I know and I would never vote for him in the first place but am glad to see that he is doing what those like me have been trying to get him to do. Last count I saw we had more no’s than they had yes’ but still had 9 or so undecided’s.
