The White House appears ready to move quickly on a nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court should Justice John Paul Stevens decide to retire before the end of the term.
The vetting of the short list of candidates was already largely done last year when President Barack Obama picked Sonia Sotomayor to replace David Souter, and knowledgeable sources say the president is likely to work off the same dossiers, now being updated. The list includes Solicitor General Elena Kagan, appeals court Judges Diane Wood and Merrick Garland, and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Given what Obama’s been willing to risk with the health care debate, there’s no telling who he’ll choose.
Block it until the nominee dies of old age.
“Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.”
That’s a joke right?
.....until the Bastille is retaken.....
Dear Lord, please let him nominate the equivalent of his David Souter. Someone who looks good but will betray everything he stands for.
Dear GOD as though we’ve not enough on our plates...
I'm hoping they included her name just so the others didn't seem so insane. Given Obama's track record for czar and cabinet appointments it's very likely that this list includes tax evaders and outright communists.
Good call.
It can’t be a “short list” as in arm twisting congress critters and senators on health care, Omama has promised this job to about 50 of them.
Maybe they know something about November that we don’t???
Something tells me Ginsberg might be looking for the door as well...
This will make things very interesting in the near future...
No one to the left of Scalia.
Diane Wood, Pro-Gay Rights, openly hostile to Christian beliefs on the subject
Merrick Garland, May be in the list as a distraction, Not finding much on him. Most articles have him as a moderate.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. Pro-Choice, Has been accused of having a pro-gay agenda (but denies it). Identified Christians and ex-veterans as probable domestic terrorists.
Napolitano? Not just no, but hell no.
Napolitano? You've got to be kidding. She's pushing the envelope now on The Peter Principle.
Hang in there, judge.
Yeah ;-)
Rest assured that whomever it is they will be an ACLU, Progressives, Commie, Obamabot.
