The Dixiecrat Myth
Bob Parks: Black & Right ^ | 3/19/10 | Bob Parks

Posted on 03/19/2010 6:33:26 AM PDT by bocopar

The left is quite annoyed that myself and others dare link the racist, segregationist past in this country to Democrats, at that flies in the face of everything they claim to champion, when it comes to civil rights, racial tolerance, etc.

The Democrats' own website, to this day, attempts to take fraudulently credit for the civil rights movement and legislation, and when called on it, the recitation is the same: "we've grown" and "don't forget about the Dixiecrats".

Defensive liberals claim the Dixiecrats, as a whole, defected from the Democrat Party when President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (no thanks to Democrats), and became Republicans which they claimed were more accepting of segregationist policies.

Well, I decided to get some opinions on the matter from some historians.

it’s hilarious how you tout the CRA like it was so wonderful...what a can of worms that has opened.

freepers can be so blinded by political correctness about anything to do with black folks

there is a direct line from the CRA to Great Society to Affirmative Action to Obama to Eventual Amnesty to Goodbye America as we know it.

Conservatives today laud the CRA just because they think it gives them cred with blacks much like swooning over socialist MLK.

Thank you for posting this. As the daughter of a white civil rights worker during the actual era, my mom was one of the first republicans in Mississippi. The party just did not exist in MS. at the time. She was very passionate about civil rights and the republican party, but eventually left the civil rights movement when the northern communists took over the whole thing. She saw the writing of communist corruption on the wall and could never reconcile that reality with her limited government and republican beliefs.

The freedom riders were not Republicans...if your mom was she was a rare exception....extremely rare. Most aside from celebrity photo ops like Heston were kids...mostly Jewish kids from northern schools..and they were fairly socialist.

Racial redress was for them a means to an end.

I was there as a lad.

No kidding. People seem to forget that the parties switched places in the Southern political alignment. The kind of people who were actually Republicans in the Deep South prior to Goldwater are roughly no different than the whites who remain Democrats in urban areas today.

Good post. Off the top of my head I can’t remember any of the Dixiecrat Senators other than Thurmond who defected to the GOP. John Stennis, Richard Russel, John Eastland, and the rest of deep south’s Democratic Senators remained Democrats.

That’s usually my trick question when ambushed. I ask them to name some Dixiecrats and all they come up with is Thurmond. When I remind them he was the first Southern senator to hire black staffers, they lose their stuttering minds.

Re your post #3. Bingo! Even LBJ knew and even said he was losing the South for the Dims because of this foul Socialist Act. What happened was in 1964 Southern Whites began to vote Republican because of Goldwater and the trend continued and accelerated in 1966.
Senator John Tower of Beaumont (R-Tex) won a resounding reelection race against an establishment Dim. He was elected in 1961 to LBJ's old seat (The first Republican elected in Texas since “Reconstruction”) and was the only Republican to filibuster the CRA. Tower's winning LBJ's seat was bigger by far than the Scott Brown's win in Mass. Hell, not too long before that, in East Texas, you could get your ass shot off by declaring you were a Republican. Old habits die hard and in rural Counties it is only now that people are supporting GOPers for local office.
In my own County located between Houston and Beaumont, all of the County wide elected officials who were not already Republicans switched over last year as did those in Hardin County, (Lumberton, Silsbee, Kountze) once a stronghold of White “Yellow Dog” Dims.
(Of course in my County, Obama carried about 23% of the vote, almost exclusively Black.)

Go take that hateful crap over to Stormfront or better yet, the DU. If you think that any group of people do not deserve to have their liberties protected, which the CRA was originally written to do, you’re not really a conservative, you’re just a populist that’s keen on Jesus.

I’ve always been intrigued by Dem sources about Nixon’s so-called “Southern Strategy.” They bring that up every election. According to these Dems, Nixon did some really nasty things to appeal to southern whites. What did Nixon do? Did he reintroduce segregation? Take away black voting rights? No, none of those things happened. That “southern strategy” charge is basically a typical lib/Dem canard.

I was there as a lass too. I have talked to her about that era in depth over the years. Her values, as far as giving blacks equal rights, were morally right and I am proud of her beliefs and efforts during that time. It’s not ‘white guilt’ that makes me proud of her. It is the moral courage that she show and the fact that she was trying to do the right thing against a sea of democrat bigots. It was a scary time for our family because of the very public stand that she took.

She was not the only southern republican in Mississippi that supported Barry Goldwater and that was also a civil rights advocate during that time either. The problem arose when the northern progressive movement took over the whole civil rights movement and came to the south to sow discord and communism. Like you say, to the progressives(communists), it was a means to an end..just like it still is today. There are alot of parallels with what the progressives are trying to do with immigration now. Just like during the civil rights era, the progressives are not trying to ‘help’ hispanics..they are trying to use them for power and condemn them to a permanent life of government dependency.

Similarly, the vast majority of conservatives that are against ammnesty are not anti-hispanic or racist...just like they weren’t racist against blacks during the 60s. They were against the CRA because they knew what the progressives were planning...more big government, entitlements and power voting blocks for their own ‘ends’....just like now.

Like I said, my mother actually left the civil rights ‘movement’ because of the communists taking over the leadership...not because her belief in equal rights for blacks had waivered.

I don’t let the black community off scott free either. They have allowed themselves to be used for very evil (communist) purposes. It is way past time that they wake up...just like the hispanics need to wake up too. They are being used and condemned to a life of poverty and progressive slavery. We need to do whatever we can to assist black conservatives in spreading that message among their communities too. Black conservatives are very brave to stand up for our constitution and limited government in the sea of black radical progressives permeating their communities. They deserve our full support and gratitude.

Hopes this helps to clarify.

“Dixiecrats” goes all the way back to 1940’s with Strom Thurmond...at that time prior, a Democrat, as a presidential candidate...

Southerners wanted less government and the GOP was their natural home.

Crap. Dixiecrats switched to Republican when they realized that they could do so and still keep their big spending, big government ways.

Yea, and there is direct linkage that shows drinking milk leads to smoking crack since all crack users drank milk at one time LOL...

Californication and Greece have a lot in common. Both are broke. Do you think Ca. will hire some Greek advisers to help with the upcoming riots?

It's been a wonderful day watching the country be ruined by yet another President from Illinois. Also, the California Ditz is doing her part.

End the Occupation.
