Thanks very much for the ping, Salvation. I just saw (about 1/2 hour ago) and commented on the other thread of Schlussel’s accusations.
Very interesting.
Prayers for your stepdaughter.
Thank you very much for your prayers and concern. Hope I didn’t miss anyone.
Evelyn was transported to Spokane by Heli-Vac, along with her husband. Because she is on Medicaid, as I understand it, she had to check in at the local hospital first so the flight could be authorized. My wife was worried, naturally, because this was using up valuable time. The hospital staff put Evelyn under before she was loaded onto the helicopter.
After arriving at Sacred Heart hospital, cardiology staff did succeed in stabilizing her heartbeat using the first method they tried. It sounds as though she is doing fine now but will be kept as an inpatient for a few days.
It is an interesting situation with her children — three went with a friend and the baby came here. My wife is real good with infants and in fact the baby always seems to “select” her.
Evelyn’s husband accompanied her on the flight but as is typical for them they are 150 miles away with no money or very little. Still some logistics to be worked out for them.
Thanks again, FReepers.
The way you find out what they are doing is read their IRS Form 990, where all their outlays and income flows are detailed. In 2007, for instance, they laid out $895,000 as grants. That was one part of their “program expenses,” namely the part that actually, really, tangibly, reached the targeted needy population. The rest of their program expenses were salaries, postage, printing, office supplies, etc.
The only other program expense that might be of interest as reaching the target needy group would be “postage”. We might assume that it is so high, because of a program to deliver “care packages” overseas. That would be reaching the targeted population.
One other point, they put aside $2.4 million into “investments” in 2007. This could be an endowment for scholarships. There is some evidence that it is. But if any of the interest/dividends were distributed, say as scholarships, it would come under “cash grants.” Again, that was $895,000
Finally, with investment income, donations, and all, FA income for 2007 was $12.4 million.
If you combine $895,000 in grants and $1.2 million in postage (ALL for care packages!) you get a total outlay to the target charity population of $2.1 million on income of $12.4 million. That is an outlay of 2.1/12.4 x 100 = 16.9%.
So, for every dollar in, $0.17 went to the targeted charity, and $0.83 went somewhere else. That somewhere else is salaries, fundraising, printing, travel, etc. etc. Also, some went for advertising and instruction encouraging military service, and similar things, according to their website.
Since I have run a nonprofit since 1992, I can run the same analysis on my own IRS forms. In our case, for every dollar in, $0.86 goes to the targeted charity and $0.16 goes somewhere else.
Analyzing both public charities by the same criteria.
I glad that she is stable and on the way to recovery. :)
You can check out their tax filings from here: http://www.freedomalliance.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2172&Itemid=21
Sure looks to me like the bulk of their “program expenses” are overhead such as a staff of full-time employees and think-tank type activities. Essentially they know how to get good charity ratings by spending money on ‘programs’ that never reach the supposed beneficiaries.
See pages 39+ in Freedom Alliance’s 2008 tax return (linked in Debbie’s article), the figures are there. Rather paltry IMHO.
BTTT and thank you.
I have linked this thread of yours on the Schussel thread in post #502.
If any of this were true the Obammy Admin would have had the IRS pouncing on them like a cat on a lizard.
Scholarships are reported to the IRS by non-profits. Why not look or ask for the info before condemning them?
You may not know a lot about non-profits, but you hit the nail on the head!
Things can be legal and still sleazy.
I just got on this morning - best wishes to your stepdaughter’s family, and I hope everything goes smoothly for you!
Prayers for your stepdaughter. hope that everything goes ok!
Thanks. My husband has actually been the executive director of a nonprofit for 20 years. He’s currently out of town and i haven’t had access to his opinion on this. I am going to have him look at it. I am mostly troubled by the appearance that this is fed by Schlussel’s animus against Sean Hannity and her proven track record of trashing conservatives. Add that to the suspect timing of her raising it NOW and it gives me even more pause. I don’t like the idea of a worthy charity losing support because of a personal grudge and i’m afraid that’s what is behind this. That being said, if they need to shape up and bring stuff into line, then that is what they need to do.
If its not true. There should be a hefty lawsuit. That would really help the fallen soldiers kids.
