I noted it to a friend of mine. A set of Allen sockets from McMasterCarr in 2004 was $74. Today it’s around $150. You also see it in Dairy, Meat, and Poultry (eggs, wings, breasts etx). Prices have doubled in the last 18 months.

I think it is an age thing, too.

My eyes are finally getting to where I need bi-focals and they are constantly nuancing the lighting in the stores.

I wouldn’t mind if it was to save a buck, but they’re trying to “set a mood” for all the shopping moms.

I can’t read the labels,...mutter, mutter, mutter!

My wife says that I sound more like my pop everyday. She means this as an insult, but I wear it as a badge of pride.

I’m going to enjoy getting older; I’m going to make everyone else miserable for a change!

Oh, Target only beats Walmart on sales or niche products. On the dog food, they are more expensive on the same size bag for adult dogs, but only Target has the 20# bag for puppy food, so they get my purchase. But on my staples, Walmart beats them consistently on day to day prices.

One cannot measure inflation by taking a few products

True statement, while some of the grocery items have gone up in price others have come down. We go through 10 gallons of milk a month (I ration it or the kids would use twice that) milk was nearly $4 last year, this year it is down to under $3. Our over all monthly grocery bill has gone up some, but the children have gotten older and eat more. I haven't seen an unusually high jump in prices.

We are going in to a hyperinflation context.

Not yet. How are your wages doing? How is your house doing? There are huge deflationary pressures in the economy right now due to the destruction of the credit bubble, despite moderate inflationary pressures in food and energy. People have cut their spending way back, and that's anything but inflationary. Hyperinflation may well come - Obama dreams of it - but it's a while off, yet.

I noticed the same thing the other day in regards to Reeses Peanut Butter cups. I buy the snack packs that come with around ten all individually wrapped. I bought a pack the other day and noticed that the cups were smaller. Not by much, but enough that a fan such as I noticed.

Our Walmart does have lights turn off and on in response to the ambient outside lighting. It was a little strange at first. They have skylights, so when storms come over the store gets really dark, and you will have lights turning on and off in response to that situation.

Hmmm...... I may need to check WM grocery prices, it's been awhile.

I was just in WM for an unrelated purchase and I checked their prices on diapers, TP, etc. My local Target has them beat, but only because of the coupons Target sends me. I can double-up - use Target plus manufacturer's coupons - and save a bundle. :-)

that is because the price paid to farmers for milk has been fluctuating wildly...it’s back down to starvation levels for them again...

Excellent point.

BTW I just saw a story about the unemployment in Elkhart,IN the RV capital of the world. I was watching Rv sales when this downturn hit. RV sales predicted the fall almost to the day. The situation in Elkhart is not improving and many are still hurting. RV’s are a good indicator of a turnaround but they are a lagging one on the way up.

.45 ACP is up to $17/box of 50 rounds. Outrageous!

Casting and reloading are your friends.

My hard cost is about $3 per box, but that doesn't count the time involved in brasswhoring, berm mining, smelting, casting, lubing, loading, etc. For me, it's worth the hassle because I enjoy the process. YMMV.

Oh yeah, we have a Target.

So do we. I truly believe that Target has the lowest prices. Their staff is always smiling. The store is always so clean. I rarely go to Walmart and stopped altogether the day I needed to use their restroom. It was disgusting. If they have so little concern for hygiene then they must have little concern for everything else.

Yes - I used to reload, too.
Joked that it was only throwing a handfull of dimes downrange - now they're quarters.
Out of competition now so not firing enough (500 rnds/week) to do the whole reloading thing...

"I had the same experience with broccoli from there before. I ended up cooking it rather than for the purpose I bought it for jsut do it wouldn’t go to waster."

Ever try slicing a fresh bottom onto the stalk and placing in water, ala a fresh flower or asparagas? Can work wonders.

I’ve noticed in a few supermarkets where products were once on sale for $1.99 are now on sale for 2/$5...the $2.99 features have been replaced with 2/$7.

It’s real difficult to get out of a store for less than $100 and actually have something to eat for dinner for a couple of days.

Discount markets that used to be ‘rock bottom’ are now ‘a pebble of a difference’

For most of my life, I never worried about shelf prices, I just grabbed whatever I needed (or wanted) and threw it in the shopping cart without a second thought. Couldn't be bothered to go bargain hunting or coupon-clipping.

However, starting about a couple years ago, my wife and I started some belt-tightening. Not so much out of need but out of a sense of wanting to see if we could "make do with less" as our kids are now grown up and we head towards our retirement years.

I was absolutely shocked with how much money I could save just by paying careful attention to what I was buying and paying for. We now buy most of our household items in bulk at the the Costco or Sam's Club. We get a lot of generic brands. For example, a 99 cent bottle of generic hair shampoo gets our hair just as clean as those six dollar bottles of designer shampoos in those fancy, colorful, over-designed bottles (and those bottles hold a lot less product too).

Instead of bottled water, we filter it at the tap (can't tell the difference). We do a lot more cooking from scratch and was amazed to discover that we could easily cut our grocery bill by more than half just by eliminating the pre-prepared "heat-and-eat" type foods.

Getting back to the article, being that buy mostly bulk and generic items, we are not noticing a lot of increases in what we are buying. However, I am sorry to report that the price of beer has increased significantly here in Massachusetts, due to the recently imposed "sin tax" on alcohol. Might have to start getting my beer in New Hampshire.
