WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. law enforcement agents are following the rest of the Internet world into popular social-networking services, going undercover with false online profiles to communicate with suspects and gather private information, according to an internal Justice Department document that offers a tantalizing glimpse of issues related to privacy and crime-fighting.
Think you know who's behind that "friend" request? Think again. Your new "friend" just might be the FBI.
The document, obtained in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, makes clear that U.S. agents are already logging on surreptitiously to exchange messages with suspects, identify a target's friends or relatives and browse private information such as postings, personal photographs and video clips.
Among other purposes: Investigators can check suspects' alibis by comparing stories told to police with tweets sent at the same time about their whereabouts. Online photos from a suspicious spending spree - people posing with jewelry, guns or fancy cars - can link suspects or their friends to robberies or burglaries.

I think this is very wise, actually. People go on Facebook etc. voluntarily and put out their information in public. Why should law enforcement ignore it?
I’m also here:
and on Hot Air, Twitter, Breitbart’s Bigs and a few others.
I agree with that...kids and strangers...and scarey people who can’t find a date!
I have a friend in Calif. who soon learned the men she met there were not exactly the cream of the crop...rather the bottom feeders! I tried to warn her but some people are just stubborn. She could have gotten hurt ya know!
Me neither...in fact big warning of a huge Trojan Virus has been on facebook for a couple weeks from what might friend, who uses it, said. Really bad one.
hey,.. you’re not far from the truth you know!
Uh no, I have a life and it doesn’t include stupid sh*t like facebook. My life isn’t the internet.
I do too—joined up to communicate with other conservatives in the state and kids—nice to have other communication when FR has been down....
Fact is, sites like Facebook are for kiddies and strangos
I’m sorry, but I take great offense at that comment..myspace is the more kiddie sight... strangos are everywhere ... I usefacebook to keep in touch with current friends and college friends long since moved elsewhere thank you.
I only put on FB what is already public knowledge.. but as a FReeper, RIGHTWING ACtivist and UNION ACTOR, that will make the Feds’ heads explode... LOL
**Fact is, sites like Facebook are for kiddies and strangos.**
And FR has Truthers and RONPAULBOTS... the difference is???
Yeah. We already know that you've posted that before on several second amendment sites and your private chats with some of your other patriot friends. /s
This is what the FBI has been relegated to? God help us.
“...and that is why I would never use Twitter, Facebook or Myspace.”
See above post #54
Frightening indeed. That's why I have not or will not post pics of myself online, especially on Facebook.
Personally, I know that my uber-liberal, in-your-face-lesbian boss trolls FB all day looking at what people have posted, and she will use anything she finds and deems inappropriate against a person - I have seen it happen.
Once somethings out there, all it takes is a mouse click to save it forever.
i wouldnt wanna think of keepin up w/ that many...
JimRob is prolly gonna regret it eventually too...
loafers are expensive these days...mousepads, not so much...8^}
LOL!
They have been here from day two.
