WASHINGTON, March 17 (UPI) -- Work on the virtual fence along the U.S.-Mexican border will stop, freeing up its share of stimulus funds, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said.

Napolitano said Tuesday the halt to work beyond the two pilot projects in Arizona was pending a broader reassessment of the concept, and the $50 million in economic stimulus funds planned for the project would be diverted to technology such as mobile surveillance devices, sensors, radios and laptop computers, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

“Virtual” fences were only meant to fool virtual idiots.

REAL fences, however, work.

These are the same idiots who ban fire breaks in forested areas allowing fires to engulf huge areas. With Mexico figuratively on fire we need a fire break before that violence engulfs the border areas on our side and spreads north.

The system of sensors and cameras along the Southwest border known as SBInet has been plagued with cost overruns and missed deadlines.

It's a government run project. What in the hell do you expect???

Real fences still need to be watched, or else they will just slow down people with ladders or wire cutters by a few seconds. However they do make it obvious when they are not being guarded when ladders and holes start showing up. A virtual fence can be turned off (like most of our elected reps from both parties would do without constant political pressure) without notifying anyone.

The Republicans want cheap labor and the Democrats want cheap votes. Neither seem to care that the rest of us will pick up a huge bill so their supporters can save a few bucks.

Oh, my!! How inspirationally brilliant. Just as the Mexican drug wars near and cross OUR borders, just as the number of dead AMERICANS begins to rise, our brilliant government decides to cease protecting our land. (Is it true there has been military ‘movements’ along the Canada’s southern border. Those Canadians you know!!!
(Sorry Canada, but I needed the name of our other bordering country.)

Are we really surprised? Let's see...pass health care, grant amnesty to these poor folks and then their "base" is solidified for future elections.

Gov. Perry has repeatedly asked for National Guard to be stationed along the US/Mexican border, to no avail.

The "problem" is actually a part of their sick solution, sadly.

We don’t need a “virtual” fence; we need a WALL! Then we can talk about which of the illegals we keep and which (most hopefully) we send back. Let them take back their country from the drug cartels and the elitist oligarchy, or let them suffer with what they’ve allowed to happen to their country! < /rant >
