Gunman tries to attack Lenin's corpse in Red Square

A man armed with a high-powered gas pistol tried to break into Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin's tomb on Red Square in Moscow, shooting a policeman in the process.

The man, named as Sergey Karpentsov, is quoted as saying he wanted to let loose a volley of bullets at Lenin's carefully embalmed corpse, one of the Russian capital's most popular and ghoulish tourist attractions.

"My main demand is the quick bulldozing of the mausoleum which contains the body of the anti-Christ," he said. "I wanted to open fire on the tomb with an assault rifle but I was advised not to do that in case the tomb is armour-plated."

"I have drawn attention to this issue with my actions," he added.

Lenin's waxy presence at the heart of the Russian capital 86 years after his death continues to divide Russian society, with many older people believing he should be left where he is.

Others insist he should be re-buried near his mother in St Petersburg, arguing that it is incongruous for his corpse to remain on Red Square almost two decades after Soviet Communism was rejected.

As long as Putin is in power, he won't get his wish.

Put him in a Ripley's Wax Museum. That's what PT Barnum would have done.

Too bad he did not succeed at his mission. The guy needed some C4 to take out the Mausoleum and to put a nice hole in the Kremlin walls. The problem with this is innocent people would die needlessly during the attack.

Russia/Soviet/Coldwar2 PING!!!

Yes, but it’s a great target to shoot at regardless.

“high-powered gas pistol”?

Probably tear gas pistol. The cartridge has no bullet; instead it contains tear gas (a powder.) When fired, the powder creates tear gas, and it is directed toward the target.

>> “high-powered gas pistol”?

I saw a demo of gas powered rifles (charged with a SCUBA tank to 2,000 psi) at NRA Phoenix last year - they can easily split 2x4s at 50 feet. It coulda been one like that. Korea manufactures a lot of them.

>Karpentsov is now undergoing a series of tests to ascertain whether he is of sound mind. Police have disclosed that he is a convicted criminal who has been on the run since 2007 for armed assault. He has also reportedly been convicted for rape.<

I loved this story until I saw the last sentence.

The guy’s just another ahole running amok.

"body of the anti-Christ"

The guy sounds sane to me. Even Obama has a long way to go to catch up with Lenin.

Russia should dig up Stalin and others and put them on display—and charge the public to see them. They could make good money letting people see these monsters.

I think that was a rubber-bullet firing pistol which can also fire gas cartridges. That’s the only kind of handgun allowed in Russia for civilian use.

At the same time they are free to own a variety of rifle and shotgun types labeled as ‘assault’ and banned in America.
