Arctic Sea Ice Grows
American Thinker ^ | March 15, 2010 | Jerome J. Schmitt

Sea-ice grows and retreats each winter.  Satellite images have record the extent of artic sea-ice coverage on a daily basis since 1979.  The trend in March 2010 shown here is well above the lowest coverage recorded in 2006-2007.

This should be encouraging news for all those alarmed that the ice-caps might be melting.

Polar bears can breathe easier knowing they are less likely to go floating out to sea on a floe while they sleep.

Thank goodness! We elected Barack Obama just in time.

History will note this as the time when the seas began to fall and the ice began to rise or something.

Well, it’s encouraging to me, but I have to admit that my fears of diminishing polar ice are sincere. It’s still on the low side, note well!

“This should be encouraging news for all those alarmed that the ice-caps might be melting.”

No. It will annoy them because it is a glitch in the narrative. Their dedication to their cause has nothing to do with the extent of polar ice.

The south pole has suffered far less than the north pole.

Heh heh...too bad Algore couldn’t go out on one of those floes and pet the nice bears...

Suffered you say? Is that your own thought?

Antarctica is a bastion, but there have been changes, as noted of course in the press. The collapse of the Larsen Ice Shelves A and B a few years ago were notable, as well as the erosion of the Wilkins Ice Shelf on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula. OTOH, the McMurdo region shows remarkably little change since the 1970’s. I think it will take an observer of greater longevity than myself to make a final judgement of the current trends.

It’s irritating to hear people talking about “polar ice loss” using figures that only apply to the North Pole and without qualifying that term.

Well, it’s encouraging to me too, but whether this is a short term artifact of our recent longer than usual quiet sun, or a real change is yet to be seen.

All because Obama had us check the air in our tires. That guy is simply amazing.

The Antarctic sea ice is if anything growing. The present anomaly is almost as large (positive) as the negative Arctic anomaly.

In the summer of 2007 there was a dramatic retreat of the North Polar sea ice coverage. This led to some very “alarmist” predictions that the North Pole would be laid bare in year or two. As incorrect as these predictions were, they were understandable in view of the rate of change leading to the 2007 minimum. Of course, there has been a rebound in the three years since. But as far as I’m concerned, everything is up in the air. If that could happen, why couldn’t it go further? Maybe we will see an ice free Arctic Ocean in a few more years. As to the cause, who knows? But I’ve always said, if we get melting ice caps and rising sea levels, we’re going to go nuts, one way or the other.

If Antarctic sea ice is growing, why did the Larsen A and B Ice Shelves and the Wilkins Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula collapse ? These had been permanent features for thousands of years, as I understand.

That’s what ice does when it grows. Note, the shelves collapsed, not melted!

See here: http://wattsupwiththat.com/?s=antarctica

and especially here:

Yer out of your mind. They collapsed because of surface melting that formed fissures. They were very thick! This sudden collapse was a surprise to the observing scientists, as they had never seen it before. Of course, this gave them ideas that everything could "go south" very quickly. They could be right.
