Senators question $1 million pay for charity's CEO

WASHINGTON -- A group of Republican senators is questioning high salaries and expensive travel bills for executives at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, raising issues that could jeopardize millions in federal funding for the national charity.

The four senators said they were concerned that the chief executive of a charity that has been closing local clubs for lack of funding was compensated nearly $1 million in 2008. They also questioned why in the same year officials spent $4.3 million on travel, $1.6 million on conferences, conventions and meetings, and $544,000 in lobbying fees.

... millions in federal funding for the national charity.

This is the root of the problem. No "charity" should be on taxpayer-financed welfare. In an ideal world, charities would get no welfare and they would have to rely solely on private funding in order to survive.

True. Our government spends more on corporate charity than they do on homeland security.

If you want an eye opener, check out the pay for the CEO of your local United Way chapter. There’s a good chance that he/she’s getting a salary well into the six figures, even for moderately-sized cities. This is of course, to say nothing of the pay that the national CEO of United Way makes - close to seven figure, or more.

I only worked in a union shop for a year when I was a younger man. When the United Way came around expecting a weekly “tithe” deducted outta my paycheck, they got really pissed when I told them NO. Tried to make me feel like I was personally obligated to give.

I never have and never will give money to that bunch.

They should talk to puke Al Franken. When he was at Air America a loan from this group paid his salary.

Maybe he could enlighten everyone?

Same thing happened to me as a “white collar” at a couple of big corporations I worked at. One year they tried to rope me into being the coordinator for the annual tithing to UW...I declined the opportunity.

30 years ago, I worked at a national dept store that wanted us to contribute to United Way. I wouldn’t do it. They were upset that they couldn’t get 100% participation.

Found out that there were 3 of us. Heck, I made 10 cents over minimum wage and worked part time. I couldn’t afford it, even if I was so inclined.

LOL - Same for the Military - some snot nosed Jr grade officer always was pushing for “100% participation”

I had an NCO that showed me the way out - “Give ‘em 2c” he said, “you participated and made a statement at the same time.”

For the next 18+ years they got 2c.

Good idea but they wanted a weekly withdrawal from my paycheck and that wasn’t happening.
