Specter Accuses Sestak of Misleading About White House Offer for Job

Sen. Arlen Specter took a shot at his Pennsylvania Democratic Senate primary opponent on Friday, suggesting Rep. Joe Sestak was milking his claim that the White House offered him an administration position if he dropped his challenge to Specter.

"He has made the charge to get political mileage, playing underdog without getting into specifics," Specter said in an interview on a Pennsylvania radio station.

"I am honest and will never do a deal unlike Arlen Specter who switched parties," Sestak shot back in an interview that followed Specter on the same station.

"I answered honestly, then I said no further comment. Ask the guy who is unemployed, does he care about this?" Sestak added.

The latest Rasmussen poll shows Specter leading 51 to 36 percent over Sestak in the primary. Specter, the five-term senator who was a Republican until about a year ago, won the backing of the state's Democratic Party committee last month. (snip)

It would be good if Sestak produced tangible evidence — names, dates, places, etc. Just making the allegation and then backing down demonstrates he doesn’t have a spine. If he has a spine, he should man up.

From the article:

On the radio interview, Specter also accused Sestak of "not paying minimum wage and not showing up to work." Specter said failing to pay his staff minimum wage is an offense that could merit jail time.

Good gravy....how did Specter ever get elected?

Well, this looks as if this is picking up a bit of steam. There wasn’t much comment from the media when Sestak first spoke out about the job offer. The more these two losers smear each other, the better the chance of winning the general election and finally putting Arlen out to pasture.

Specter should just shut up. He is the worst kind of politician. A political whore, that bends over when the price is right.

His most famous case, however, came in 1979, when he was in private practice and thinking about running for the Senate. A man named Ira Einhorn, better known as the “Unicorn,” had been arrested for the murder of his girlfriend; she had been missing for a year and a half when police found her mummified corpse squeezed into a trunk hidden in Einhorn’s closet.

Einhorn was a celebrated leftist and is credited with helping found Earth Day. He also had strong ties to Philadelphia elites — a group of people Specter was cultivating for his prospective Senate campaign when he agreed to become Einhorn’s lawyer.

At an arraignment, the government demanded a $100,000 bail for Einhorn. Before Judge William Marutani, Specter called this “excessively excessive” and insisted on a reduced figure. Marutani wondered if Einhorn might “split for parts unknown.” He mentioned Norway as a possible destination. “I have to disagree with your last statement,” replied Specter. “Anybody is as likely to go to Norway as anybody else.” Through the future senator’s efforts, Einhorn’s bail was dropped to $40,000. The accused man only had to put out ten percent of it in cash to secure his release.

As things turned out, Specter was proven correct: Einhorn didn’t flee for Norway. He went to Sweden instead, slipping out of the United States shortly before his murder trial was scheduled to begin. Einhorn remained a fugitive until 1997, when police found him living in France under a phony name with his Swedish wife. He was eventually extradited to the United States. In 2002, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

As a practical matter who will be the weaker candidate, Specter or Sestak?

I want Specter to lose now in the Dem Primary. Then he will have plenty of spare time to reflect on how his fellow Democrats screwed him over just as he screwed over the GOP. And Republicans need to see what happens when you go over to the Dark Side. What comes around goes around.

I wonder if the story (WH offering Sestak a job to take him out of the campaign) will have any legs.

What do the rest of you think? Are the few good journalists left scurrying around trying to get at the truth?

Sestak needs to name dates and names to lend to his credibility. Then if he wanted he could switch parties after November. :)
